Earplay 25: Ports and Portals
Earplay 25: Ports and Portals features two world premieres of new commissioned works by Hyo-shin Na and Christopher Trebue Moore. In response to the Bay Area's cultural diversity, Ms. Na composed Song of One Lost in the Fog, a work that bridges California Native American, East Asian and Western cultures. Written for Earplay's chamber instrumentation, Song of One Lost in the Fog gives each of the cultures a distinct voice within the larger composition inspired by Native American music to create a fascinating mixture of influences.
Christopher Trebue Moore, composed Amnesia Barrier, a new commissioned work inspired by memory loss resulting from electroshock therapy creates a complex work that questions its uses. The program continues with Swirling Streams, a kinetic tour-de-force and an Earplay commissioned work by the late U.C. Berkeley composer Jorge Liderman featuring guitarist David Tanenbaum.
Another work from the Bay Area includes a west coast premiere of Scherzo for Mixed Quartet, a brilliant new work by the Pulitzer prize-winning composer, Wayne Peterson, who has a long running relationship with the ensemble. Finally, Earplay performs Terâneler (2006) for string trio, another west coast premiere and the 2009 Aird composition winner by Tolga Yayalar, a Turkish native studying at Harvard University.
Program: Jorge Liderman, Swirling Streams (2003); Earplay commission (premiered 2004); guitar, clarinet, violin, viola and cello.
Chris Trebue Moore, Amnesia Barrier (2009) Earplay commission/world premiere; flute, cello and piano.
