Williamsburg Art and Historical Center Festival Concert Series presents Sound and Sky, a program of compositions by six international composers, performed by the Sonora Trio on Saturday, April 24 - 3 PM at the Williamsburg Art and Historical (WAH) Center, 135 Broadway in Brooklyn, New York.
The Trio (http://sonoratrio.com/), consisting of pianist/composer/vocalist Judith Sainte Croix, flutist Andrew Bolotowsky and guitarist Oren Fader will present a work from the Costa Rican Suite by New York-based Ms. Sainte Croix, Los Pajaros Blancos de la Noche Profunda (The White Birds of the Deep Night), along with Under the Winter Moon the River Wind Sharpens the Rocks by American composer Thomas Cleman, Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu’s guitar solo based on Over the Rainbow, two French pieces, Gnossiennes #1 by Erik Satie and an arrangement for guitar of Pavane by Gabriel Faure, and Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars by Brazil’s Antonio Carlos Jobim.
The concert will conclude with a special appearance by Mark DeGarmo and dancers, performing a segment from the opera Vine of the Soul which he and Sainte Croix are currently developing.
Suggested donation for the April 24 concert is $5. For more information contact WAH at 718-486-7372 or visit http://wahcenter.net/.
Described as “one of those occasional blasts of fresh air from a larger world” (Village Voice) and a “modern and rich textured style which draws on rhythms, melodies and structural elements of Hopi, Cheyenne and Cherokee music yet retains a modernist sophistication” (NY Times) the music of Judith Sainte Croix is lyrical and atmospheric, with ancient and futuristic sounds, and has garnered the support of the NEA, NYSCA, and the Jerome, Wurlitzer and Time Warner Foundations, among others. Visit her at http://judithsaintecroix.com/.
Andrew Bolotowsky plays flutes from every era and corner of the world, has given over 3000 recitals, many featuring works composed expressly for him, and has made numerous recordings of Baroque and contemporary music.
A highly regarded performer of classical guitar repertoire, Oren Fader (http://www.orenfader.com/) has premièred over 150 solo and chamber works by composers such as Milton Babbitt, Charles Wuorinen and Tod Machover.
Fulbright recipient Mark DeGarmo’s artistic vision includes site-specific choreography and multicultural traditions from Ecuador, Peru and Guatemala. Visit him at http://markdegarmoarts.org/.
