Music II for Wind Quintet by Brian Wilbur Grundstrom will be performed by members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, April 25 – 7:30 PM at Second Presbyterian Church, 4200 St. Paul Street in Baltimore, Maryland. This is presented as part of their Chamber Music by Candlelight series.
Commissioned for the Trinity Chamber Players in Washington, DC, Music II for Wind Quintet was originally conceived as Music for Piano Solo II, written in 1990. While the 15-minute piece is through-composed, there are natural breaks or pauses that delineate, with one section reminiscent of a “hoedown”. Hear it at http://www.brianwilbur.com/html/compsChamberQuintet.html.
Performers include Marcia Kämper (flute), Jane Marvine (oboe), William Jenken (clarinet), David Coombs (bassoon) and Gabrielle Finck (horn). Other works on the program are Deux Rapsodies by Charles Martin Loeffler, Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano by Joseph Horovitz and Trio in C Major for Piano, Violin and Cello Op. 87 by Brahms.
The April 25 concert is free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated. For more information, call 443-759-3309 or visit htp://www.bsomusic.org/main.taf?p=4,1,14.
Brian Wilbur Grundstrom’s compositions for film, orchestra, piano, quintet and other ensembles demonstrate an innovative use of harmony and melody, which although firmly rooted in the tonal tradition is entirely new. Classically trained in piano as well as music theory from Gettysburg College, he has continued orchestration and composition studies with John David Earnest. His awards include Encore from American Composers Forum and ASCAPLUS from ASCAP. He is also a grant recipient from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. A member of ASCAP, Brian attended the prestigious ASCAP/NYU Buddy Baker Film Music Workshop. He has composed music for 2 Minutes Later, a full feature by Robert Gaston, in addition to a number of short films. He is a recent recipient of a Bronze Peer Award from the Television, Internet, and Video Association of Washington D.C. (TIVA) for the musical underscore in Sadie’s Waltz.
His music has been performed by SONOS Chamber Orchestra, Shippensburg Festival Orchestra, Trinity Chamber Orchestra, George Washington University Orchestra, NIH Philharmonia, Holyoke Civic Symphony, Colla Voce and The New Jersey Gay Men’s Chorus. In November 2007, a full program of his music was presented at The Millennium Stage of The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
His CDs are available through CDBaby at http://www.cdbaby.com/. Visit his website at http://www.brianwilbur.com/.
