Vivian Adelberg Rudow’s Earth Day Suite: Dark Waters of the Chesapeake and Go Green!, Variation 1 – The Ocean Sings will be given their World Premiere by Orchestra of St. John’s, Ronald Mutchnik, conductor, on Sunday, April 18 – 4 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 9120 Frederick Road in Ellicott City, Maryland as part of their Concert for Earth Day.
The composer writes about Dark Waters of the Chesapeake, “For Sidney M. Friedberg. I composed Journey of Waters, for 14 instruments in 1984, with a vocal solo in the melody section, Grace Cavalieri lyrics, and percussion including numerous bowed antique cymbals...I recomposed the music for small orchestra, trumpet solo, and renamed the music Dark Waters in 1994. In 2005 I was asked to revise the music again and to use percussion to match the Eroica Symphony for a performance in Italy. This new version, Dark Waters of Elba, had extensive revisions…In 2006, I created Journey of Waters II giving the chorus the melody... The above performances were successful, but this composer missed the earlier more exotic percussion, so I recomposed the music once more calling it Dark Waters of the Chesapeake. I expect (this) to be the best version and hope never to change (it) again!”
She also writes about Go Green!, Variation 1 The Ocean Sings, “(This is) a flute concerto. This version was inspired by the spirit of the people, young and old, who enthusiastically help to clean up streams, other waterways, parks, roadsides, etc., to make our environment a better place.”
Featured performers in the Suite will be Luis Engleke, trumpet and Sara Nichals, flute. Other works on the program are Handel’s Water Music and Elgar’s Sea Pictures.
Tickets for the April 18 concert are $15, under 18 admitted free accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 410-461-7793 or visit http://www.orchestraofstjohns.org/.
