Laurie Lemley to Become Director of Development at WPAS
Washington, D.C.- Washington Performing Arts
Society is pleased to announce the appointment of
Laurie Lemley as Director of Development, starting
April 19, 2010. “Laurie combines a strong fundraising
background with experience as a performer so she
understands two critical aspects of our business and will
be a huge asset to our team,” said WPAS President
Neale Perl.
Lemley comes to WPAS from Arizona Opera, where she was Director of Major Gifts. She brings significant experience in the development field, having previously served as Director of Corporate, Foundation and Government Support with Arizona Opera; Annual Fund and Special Event Manager with the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix, Arizona; and Director of Theater Programs for Maine School Administrative District #75.
No stranger to Washington, she worked on the Hill in the early 1990s as a special assistant to Maine Representative Thomas H. Andrews.
A mezzo soprano, Lemley segued from musical theater to an oratorio and opera career, performing for eight years in repertory with Opera Boston. (She performed a number of roles including an appearance in the lead role of Julia Child in Bon Appétit presented by Cambridge Opera).
As Director of Theater Programs for a rural Maine school district, Lemley established new, self-funded theater programs at the elementary and middle school levels, greatly expanded the high school program and developed opportunities for students with learning, emotional and behavioral disabilities to express themselves through theatrical performance.
Lemley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with minors in Music and Theatre from Bowdoin College.
Washington Performing Arts Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1965 by impresario Patrick Hayes (1909-1998) and directed by President Emeritus Douglas Wheeler from 1982 to 2002. Led since September 2002 by its current President and C.E.O., Neale Perl,
WPAS is one of the nations’s leading presenters of live performances. WPAS serves the D.C. metropolitan area in a variety of venues, presenting a wide spectrum of performances of the highest quality, including classical music, jazz, gospel, contemporary dance, international music and other art forms.
WPAS also nurtures and supports young musicians by presenting up-and-coming performers on main stages in WPAS’ Hayes Piano Series, Kreeger String Series and Encore Series and by commissioning new works. WPAS demonstrates its commitment to providing life-long learning opportunities through arts education, youth involvement and community partnerships through broad-ranging educational programs in the schools, including The Capitol Jazz Project®, Concerts In Schools and the Embassy Adoption Program; dynamic community programs including WPAS Children of the Gospel Choir and Men and Women of the Gospel Choir; and adult programming including pre-concert lectures and programs such as Conversations with Legends, where audiences gain insight into the careers of performers such as Alfred Brendel and Sonny Rollins and Kiri Te Kanawa.

Funded in part by the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by National Endowment for the Arts.
WPAS is committed to making every event accessible for persons with disabilities. Please call the WPAS Ticket Services Office for more information on accessibility to the various theaters in which our performances are held. Services offered vary from venue to venue and may require advance notice. Washington Performing Arts Society has created profound opportunities for connecting the community to artists, in both education and performance. Through live events in venues that criss-cross the landscape of the D.C. metropolitan area, the careers of emerging artists are guided, and established artists who have bonded with the local audience are invited to return. In this way, the space between artists and audiences is eliminated, so that all may share life-long opportunities to deepen their cultural knowledge, enrich their lives, and expand their understanding and compassion of the world through the universal language of the arts. # # # #
