92nd STREET Y ANNOUNCES ITS 2010/11 CONCERT SERIES Hanna Arie-Gaifman, Director
New York, NY – 92nd Street Y announces its 2010/11 concert season, led by Director of Music & Literary Programming Hanna Arie-Gaifman. Since the 1930s, 92Y has been one of New York City’s most important artistic and cultural centers, and the upcoming season perpetuates that tradition with a variety of debut artists, longtime collaborators, cross-genre events, premieres and commissions in one of New York’s finest acoustical halls. As in previous seasons, Dr. Arie-Gaifman remains dedicated to high-quality, intellectually-stimulating events that expose 92Y audiences to rarely-heard international artists and underplayed repertoire, as well as programs with scholarly commentary that shed light on the intellectual and historical roots of the music.
92nd Street Y announces its 2010/11 season with a documentary by filmmaker Tristan Cook. “92Y: Artists from the 2010/11 Concert Season” highlights a selection of the many superb programs and artists who will appear during the upcoming season. The documentary can be viewed at www.92Y.org/Concerts
Chief among Arie-Gaifman’s goals is to expand the role of thematic programming in order to illustrate the context from which the great classical repertoire was created. Examples of such programs are The Tokyo String Quartet’s final year of the complete Beethoven string quartets paired with contemporaneous piano sonatas; Leon Fleisher's In Focus series celebrating the artist's most admired composers and works; the Takács Quartet’s Schubert series; Chamber Music at 92Y’s celebration of Schumann’s bicentennial; Masters of the Keyboard’s study of the great Chopin works; Distinguished Artists in Recital's tradition of presenting the world's great musicians in one of New York's most intimate settings; Art of the Guitar's illustration of the vast repertoire and extraordinary flexibility of the instrument; a new series at 92YTribeca introducing audiences to Toru Takemitsu's music through his films; and the introduction of best-selling author Daniel J. Levitin’s series Music and the Brain, which takes audiences on an exploration of the psychological role music has in virtually everyone’s lives.
92Y welcomes artists making their institutional debuts this season, including clarinetist Anthony McGill, pianists Juho Pohjonen, Piotr Anderszewski and Ingrid Fliter, and oboist Liang Wang. Making their New York debuts are pianist Aleksandar Madžar and the musically comedic duo of violinist Aleksey Igudesman and pianist Richard Hyung-ki Joo.
In addition to the New York and 92Y debuts of the above artists, the 2010/11 season includes a number of premieres and institutional commissions. On October 16, 2010, the Takács Quartet presents the New York premiere of Daniel Kellogg’s Soft Sleep Shall Contain You: A Meditation on Schubert's “Death and the Maiden,” a 92Y co-commission. Guitarists Sérgio and Odair Assad perform Egberto Gismonti’s Contos de Cordel: Seven Miniatures for Two Guitars, also a 92Y commission, on November 18, 2010. Jennifer Koh’s January 30, 2011 performance of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s lachen verlernt premieres a 92Y co-commissions video by Tal Rosner. Finally, on April 2, 2011, pianist Benjamin Hochman performs the world premiere of a 92Y commission by David Ludwig.
