Trio Con Brio Copenhagen
Downers Grove, IL-On Sunday April 18th at 3:00 PM the Trio Con Brio Copenhagen will perform in Downers Grove concluding Artists Showcase West’s 63rd season. Among the leading young Scandinavian chamber ensembles, the Trio con Brio Copenhagen first drew attention with a sensational performance that took the highest prize at Germany’s prestigious ARD-Munich Competition in 2002. Since then the group has taken first prize in several of the world’s leading chamber music competitions including Italy’s Premio Vittorio Gui (Florence), Norway’s Trondheim Chamber Music Competition and the Danish Radio Competition. In 2005 they received the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award, the most coveted honor for a young chamber ensemble awarded in the United States. The Trio Con Brio Copenhagen consists of the Danish pianist Jens Elvekjaer and the Korean sisters Soo-Jin Hong and Soo-Kyung Hong who perform on a Guarneri violin and Amati cello, respectively.
The Trio Con Brio Copenhagen will play music of Haydn, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn in the Johnson Auditorium of Downers Grove North High School beginning at 3:00 PM Sunday April 18th. The convenient location is 4436 Main Street, two blocks south of Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove. An educational pre-concert conversation introducing the program will be held at 2:00 PM, moderated by music commentator and art historian Joshua Kind. Ample free off street parking is available. Individual tickets can be purchased the day of the event at the cost of $25 for adults and $10 for students (Grades 1-12). Credit cards, cash and personal checks are accepted. The American Record Guide wrote of the trio’s début CD: “One of the greatest performances of chamber music I’ve ever encountered . . . What stands out from this ensemble is the range of tone and sound . . . They command an amazing range of timbres. Melodies sing with an aching sweetness, or seduce with wild eroticism, or haunt with impenetrable mystery.” Their latest CD, released in June 2009, is of the two Mendelssohn piano trios, one of which, his Trio in C minor No. 2, Op.66, will be performed in Downers Grove along with Haydn’s Trio in C major No. 43, Hob. XV:27 and Shostakovich’s Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67.
The Trio Con Brio Copenhagen’s busy schedule includes major concert halls in Europe, USA and Asia, such as Tivoli Concert Hall (Copenhagen), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Carnegie Hall (New York City), the Berlin Konzerthaus; the Mozart-Saal (Vienna), Beethoven-Haus (Bonn), the Musikhalle (Hamburg), the Mozarteum (Salzburg), the Seoul and Sejong Arts Centers (Korea), Bunka Kaikan (Tokyo), and the Bergen and Trondheim Chamber Music Festivals (Norway). The trio was "Ensemble in Residence" at Copenhagen’s Rundetaarn (Round Tower), with five sold-out concerts broadcast on the European Broadcasting Union and Danish Radio.
