International Keyboard Institute & Festival Announces 12th Season

Concerts, Lectures and Masterclasses are planned as part of the 2010 Twelfth Season of the International Keyboard Institute & Festival, which will take place at Mannes College from July 18-August 1. Two concert series will take place this year: the Prestige Series, at 6:00 pm, featuring accomplished young artists from around the world, each just at the beginning of an international career, many of them recent winners of major international competitions including Busoni, Beethoven, E-Competition, Santander, Kapell, Honens, and Cliburn; and the Masters Series, at 8:30 pm featuring Guest Artists and Faculty.

This year the Guest Artist Faculty includes distinguished pianists Joaquín Achúcarro, Akiko Ebi, Alexander Kobrin, and Olga Kern, all of whom will be giving masterclasses and performing a recital. Founder/Director Jerome Rose will perform the opening concert.

Guest artists making Festival concert debuts on the Masters Series are: Alexander Gavrylyuk and Sontraud Speidel. Returning to give a recital and masterclasses are Jeffrey Swann, Alon Goldstein, HaeSun Paik, and Eduard Zilberkant who will be performing chamber music with members of The Knights. David Dubal returns to give a lecture: "Chopin & Schumann: Poets of the Piano with Parallel Lives”.

Gary Graffman joins host David Dubal at the mid-point of the Festival for an event that will be Free to the public: “An Afternoon with Gary Graffman”. The Festival will also remember Earl Wild, who appeared numerous times at IKIF with his enlightening masterclasses and concerts, in a presentation hosted by David Dubal: “Remembering Earl Wild (1915-2010)”. This event will also be Free to the public.

In addition, this year the Festival will be devoting an entire day (Saturday, July 24) in homage to the great American pianist Leonard Shure with “A Centenary Tribute to the Artistry of Leonard Shure” featuring masterclasses given by past students; a recorded legacy seminar; a colloquium; and a concert featuring former Shure students: Ursula Oppens, David Del Tredici, Victor Rosenbaum, Jerome Rose, Beth Levin, Phillip Moll, Seth Knopp, and Edward A. Shure. A pre-concert lecture about the life of Leonard Shure will be given by former students Neal Stulberg and Hugh Wolff. The entire day’s events will be Free to the public.

Highlights of the two-week Festival include:

• Masters Series recitals by Joaquín Achúcarro, Jeffrey Swann, Akiko Ebi, Alexander Gavrylyuk, Sontraud Speidel, Alon Goldstein, HaeSun Paik, Eduard Zilberkant & members of The Knights, Alexander Kobrin, and Olga Kern.

• Prestige Series recitals by: Hinrich Alpers (Beethoven); Ying Feng (Kapell); Jue Wang (Santander); Einav Yarden (Beethoven); Minsoo Sohn (Honens); Alexander Moutouzkine (Cleveland); Alessandro Taverna (E-Competition); Michail Lifits (Busoni); Mariangela Vacatello (Cliburn); Di Wu (Cliburn)

• Lecture by David Dubal: "Chopin & Schumann: Poets of the Piano with Parallel Lives” with live performance excerpts, film and recordings; an afternoon discussion with Gary Graffman and David Dubal including live performance and recording excerpts; “Remembering Earl Wild (1915-2010)”, hosted by David Dubal.

• “A Centenary Tribute to the Artistry of Leonard Shure” featuring masterclasses given by former students; recorded legacy seminar; colloquium; and a concert by his former students

• Dorothy MacKenzie Prize Finals Concert

Faculty Artists who will teach and perform include Alexander Braginsky, Emanuel Krasovsky, Nina Lelchuk, Steven Mayer, Irina Morozova, Michael Oelbaum, Victor Rosenbaum, José Ramos Santana, Mykola Suk, and Asaf Zohar; with adjunct Faculty members Magdalena Baczewska, Asaf Blasberg, and Quynh Nguyen.

Since 1999 the Festival has attracted students from around the world who have the opportunity to attend the Festival to study with Faculty Artists, participate in masterclasses, and attend concerts and lectures given by some of the world’s best-known pianists and scholars. The Festival has grown from a base of 30 participants to well over 100 each season. Participants who attend the Festival for two weeks are eligible to compete for up to $10,000 in the Dorothy MacKenzie Artist Recognition Scholarship Awards.

Last summer the Festival received international news coverage in publications such as International Piano (UK), PianoNews (Germany), Clavier Companion (US), Chopin Magazine (Japan), Piano (Korea), and Piano Artistry (China). This year, these publications will return to cover IKIF 2009.

Over 100 video clips of past Festival events are posted on YouTube, and IKIF now has a Facebook page. Both the YouTube clips and Facebook page can be accessed directly or through links on our website at www.ikif.org.
