SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Newly named Music Director Thierry Fischer today announced the Utah Symphony’s complete 2010-11 season. The offerings will be highlighted by five Masterworks performances led by Maestro Fischer. The Utah Symphony’s season will open on Friday, September 10th, 2010 as guest conductor Hannu Lintu returns to lead renowned guest pianist Louis Lortie in Brahms’ dramatic Second Piano Concerto on a program that also includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral”.

“I am honored to be the new Music Director of the Utah Symphony and I’m excited about what the 2010-11 season has to offer the community,” said Fischer. “USUO CEO Melia Tourangeau and I worked diligently to create an exciting season that will not only thrill audiences, but challenge the orchestra as well.”

Throughout the season, Maestro Fischer has programmed the classical repertoire of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven as well as the early romantic repertoire of Mendelssohn and Schumann; all of which require a deep technical commitment and close attention to detail from the orchestra. To balance these works, the season also includes large-scale popular masterworks as well as twentieth century and contemporary works.

Guest conductors were carefully chosen and specific invitations were made to conductors who have previously worked with the orchestra, so as to build upon the relationship. In addition, new invitations were made to colleagues such as Mario Venzago, Nicholas McGegan and Pascal Rophé.

Guest artists include colleagues and friends of Maestro Fischer’s from his work in Europe and beyond. The 2010-11 season will also showcase musicians within the orchestra and local community. Tad Calcara (Principal Clarinet), Louise Vickerman (Principal Harp), Richard Elliott (Mormon Tabernacle Choir organist), Fred Adams (founder of Utah Shakespearean Festival) and the Utah Chamber Artists will all be featured during the season.

“It has been such a pleasure to create the 2010-11 season with Maestro Fischer. It has something for everyone to enjoy with a diverse offering of repertoire, guest conductors and guest artists,” said Melia Tourangeau, President and CEO. “We look forward to sharing another wonderful season of world class music with the community.”

THIERRY FISCHER’S SEASON OFFERINGS Maestro Fischer’s first performance with the orchestra in the 2010-11 season will be held on September 24 and 25, 2010 featuring Grammy-award winner Hilary Hahn performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto on a program that also includes Stravinsky’s exotic ballet The Firebird.

His appearances continue with the annual Salute to Youth performance featuring the talent of Utah’s young musicians on Tuesday, September 28, 2010.

Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter will join Maestro Fischer and the orchestra for Beethoven’s passionate First Piano Concerto on October 29 and 30, 2010. The program will also include Shostakovich’s lyrical Symphony No. 6.

The forces will come together with an expanded Utah Symphony Chorus, Utah Opera Chorus, three vocal soloists and an enormous orchestra joining Maestro Fischer on November 5 and 6, 2010 for Berlioz’s epic version of Shakespeare’s greatest love story Romeo and Juliet.

On January 7 and 8, 2011 he will lead violinist Robert McDuffie in Barber’s melodic Violin Concerto and John Adams’ Harmonielehre.

To close the season on May 27 and 28, 2011, Maestro Fischer and the orchestra will present the rhythms and energy that caused riots at the 1913 premiere of the now much-loved Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

MASTERWORKS HIGHLIGHTS Eighteen Classical performances will feature noted guest musicians such as Horacio Gutiérrez, Louis Lortie, Hilary Hahn, Karen Gomyo, Janice Chandler Eteme and Richard Elliott. THIERRY FISCHER Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer was announced in September 2009 as the new Music Director of the Utah Symphony. He has already assumed his planning responsibilities and will gradually increase his conducting commitments until 2011-12 onwards when he will conduct a minimum of 12 weeks a season. He remains Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with whom he as performed throughout the UK (including annual appearances at the BBC Proms), toured Europe and the USA, and is currently recording for Hyperion (French and Swiss composers) and Signum Records (Stravinsky). He is also Chief Conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic. From 2001-2006 he was Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Ulster Orchestra.

Fischer studied flute with Aurèle Nicolet and began his musical career as Principal Flute in Hamburg and at the Zurich Opera, where he studied scores with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and was profoundly influenced by him. His conducting career began in his 30's when he replaced an ailing colleague, subsequently directing his first few concerts with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe where he was Principal Flute under Claudio Abbado, who encouraged and inspired him in his newfound talent for conducting. Spending his apprentice years in Holland, Thierry Fischer has since appeared with many leading orchestras in the UK and Europe.

Fischer's hallmarks are a lightness of touch and transparency of texture, allowing room for vivid characterization. He has a keen stylistic sense and brings a fresh approach to repertoire which extends from Bach, the classical repertoire and early Romantics; the 2nd Viennese school, the great French composers of the early 20th century, a keen advocacy of his compatriots Frank Martin and Honegger, and a particular feel for the music of Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Fischer regularly programs contemporary composers such as Simon Holt (Composer in Residence at the BBC National Orchestra of Wales), and is a regular guest of the London Sinfonietta.

Already well-established in Europe, Fischer has conducted orchestras such as the Philharmonia, Orchestre National de Lyon, Berlin Konzerthausorchester and the radio orchestras of Paris, Stockholm, Hanover, Lugano and Saarbruecken. In parallel to his symphonic career, Fischer's collaborative approach has fostered strong relationships with several prestigious chamber orchestras, notably the Scottish Chamber, Northern Sinfonia, Dutch Radio Chamber, and Ensemble Orchestral de Paris.
