Chicago Opera Theater Presents 'Opera With a Twist' at Faith and Whiskey

January 26, 2010 | By Colleen Flanigan
Director of Marketing and PR
“I am thrilled that Opera Underground continues to reach out to the young professionals in Chicago with these social events that give just a taste of what we do,” said General Director Brian Dickie. “And we would like to thank Faith and Whiskey for hosting this evening that benefits our education efforts.”

The event will begin at 6:30pm at Faith & Whiskey in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Guests can enjoy a three hour open bar featuring COT's Signature Drink, the "Operatini", as well as hors d’oeuvres. There will be the opportunity to win great prizes that include a pair of Opera Underground memberships to Chicago Opera Theater’s 2010 Spring Festival Season. The event is a great way for young professionals in Chicago to give back to the community while enjoying great music and drinks with their friends.

A highlight of the evening will be a performance by two members of Chicago Opera Theater’s Young Artists Program. Soprano Catalina Cuervo and tenor Jorge Prego will present a short program from Puccini’s La Rondine. In conjunction with their work at COT they are both earning their Professional Diploma in Opera from Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Catalina will also perform as part of COT’s Young Artist Recitals this spring at the Chicago Cultural Center and Jorge will sing the role of Aronne in Moses in Egypt, the opening opera of COT’s 2010 Spring Festival Season at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park.

ABOUT CHICAGO OPERA THEATER

Founded in 1974 by Alan Stone, Chicago Opera Theater has carved a significant place for itself in the operatic life of Chicago and has reached an audience of hundreds of thousands through its main stage performances, outreach, education and young artist programs. Since Brian Dickie’s appointment as General Director in 1999, COT has evolved as an opera company that is young, fresh, and colorful—an image well suited to its surroundings at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park.

Chicago Opera Theater’s 2010 Spring Festival Season runs April 17 through May 16 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. The season opens with Rossini’s Moses in Egypt (April 17-25), followed by Cavalli’s Jason (April 24-May 2), and closes with Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers with Frederica von Stade (May 8-16). CHICAGO OPERA THEATER’S EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAMS

As part of Chicago Opera Theater’ mission to make opera fresh, engaging, and accessible to the entire community and ensuring opera for the next generation COT offers two youth educational outreach programs to enrich Chicago’s cultural landscape.

In the spring of 2000 COT developed an educational outreach program known as Opera for All. This outreach initiative focuses on demystifying opera for kids through in-depth, participation based programs. Working closely with classroom teachers, Opera for All incorporates the many elements of opera (vocal, visual, and performance) into the curriculum through a yearlong residency at the elementary school level in the Chicago Public Schools. The curriculum supplements participation-based classroom activities with field trips and visits by members of COT’s Young Artists Program. At the end of the year, students perform an abridged version of an opera for classmates and family members.

Chicago Opera Theater for Teens is a partnership with the City of Chicago’s After School Matters, an initiative under First Lady Maggie Daley. This partnership now in its fourth year helps Chicago high school students experience opera in a hands-on manner and gives them the exciting opportunity to perform in two separate public performances. Students meet three times a week to collaborate and rehearse selected scenes from musical theater, opera, and operetta with their artistic leaders. Students not only sing the selections on stage but also research their specific scenes to understand the work’s background and context. This experience allows Chicago students the unique opportunity to take part in a paid opera apprenticeship program. In addition to this research and development of the scenes, students in Chicago Opera Theater for Teens explore the professional performing arts world here in Chicago. In previous years students have enjoyed special field trips to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Chicago Opera Theater and also had the rare opportunity to meet internationally accomplished opera singers.
