On February 1, Albany Records will release an album of composer Lawrence Dillon’s music featuring actors and singers titled Appendage and Other Stories in celebration of his 50th birthday.

The title track Appendage, features soprano Lauren Flanigan along with an ensemble conducted by Ransom Wilson in the premiere recording of this major work. A song cycle in six sections, Appendage traces a journey of creativity from incoherence to a cautious self-awareness. Texts may be found on the composer’s website, http://www.lawrencedillon.com/appendage.php. “Appendage was a pivotal work in my development as a composer,” writes Dillon. “I was able to combine my musical and literary interests on an unprecedented scale.”

Also on the disk: the theater pieces Entrance and Exit for actor and chamber ensemble, and Still Point, a setting of a sonnet by Shona Simpson, for mezzo, viola and piano.

Entrance and Exit are framing pieces for a chamber concert. Entrance is about layers of memory and connections to the past: a story unfolds about a listener whose mind wanders away from the music and drifts back to another time and place. Exit is a spin through an entire life cycle, foretelling the future as a metaphorical journey from birth to death and beyond. Texts for both works may be found at http://www.lawrencedillon.com/entrance-and-exit.php.

Lauren Flanigan has enjoyed a rich career interpreting great musical masterworks from the bel canto to Berio and centering specifically on the American musical canon. Recordings: The Cabildo, Peter Ibbetson, Merrymount, Frau Margot, Monologues, Symphony #6 Plutonian Ode and the major motion picture Death to Smoochy.

Ransom Wilson is an Assistant Conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, and has been guest conductor at the New York City Opera, Glimmerglass, London Symphony, Krakow Philharmonic, Halle Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, chamber orchestras of Los Angeles, St. Paul and San Francisco. He is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and is on the faculty of the Yale School of Music.

Other performers on the disk are actors Robert Beseda and Cinny Strickland, mezzo Theodora Hanslowe, flutists Rebecca Nussbaum and Elizabeth Ransom, clarinetist Stephen Williamson, saxophonist Taimur Sullivan, trumpeter Judith Saxton, violinists Jacqui Carrasco and Arnaud Sussmann, violists Sheila Browne, Hsin-Yun Huang and Richard O’Neill, cellists Clancy Newman and Adele O’Dwyer, bassist Paul Sharpe, pianists Melvin Chen, Allison Gagnon, Robert Rocco and Thomas Sauer.
