Bach to Dreams of Flying
Queens Symphony Orchestra and Musica Reginae, led by Music Director and Conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, continues its 57th season with Bach to Dreams of Flying - part two in the Masterworks Concert Series "Strings Attached" - on Saturday, February 20th at 7:30 p.m. at our artistic home, Queensborough Performing Arts Center in Bayside.
In Bach to Dreams of Flying, QSO will showcase two world premieres -- Da Camera by George Theophilus Walker and Dreams of Flying by the acclaimed composer Victoria Bond, featuring soloists from Musica Reginae. The concert will also highlight two classic works -- Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 by J.S. Bach and the Capricorn Concerto by Samuel Barber.
George Walker has honored QSO with his latest composition, Da Camera for Piano Trio, String Orchestra, Harp, Celesta and Percussion, which we are thrilled to premiere in Queens. Notably, Mr. Walker became the first black composer to receive the Pulitzer Price in 1996, was the first black graduate of the Curtis Institute in 1945 and was the first black instrumentalist to be signed by major management in 1950.
Victoria Bond wrote Dreams of Flying to explore the ecstatic sensation of flying and floating freely through the air. Described by The Music Connoisseur, "This lively music exploits Brazilian dance rhythms and bird calls in a way that liberates the soul while reminding us of our limitations." Ms. Bond is the only woman composer and conductor to receive commissions from major organizations and also hold music director positions with leading ensembles, in addition to being the first woman to be awarded a doctorate from The Juilliard School.
A Pre-Concert Lecture at 6:30 pm offers an informative talk about the evening's event. Maestro Kitsopoulos and our special guest artists will preview and explain the selected pieces and also answer questions about the program. The lecture is free to subscribers and only $5 for ticket buyers.

About Queens Symphony Orchestra
Founded in 1953 and in its 57th season, Queens Symphony Orchestra (QSO) is the borough's only professional orchestra and the oldest and largest professional arts organization in Queens. Maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos, in his fourth season as QSO Music Director, is in a rare position in the orchestral world as only the third Music Director in Queens Symphony's history. QSO's vision and mission statements reflect the organization's priority of service to the culturally diverse members of the Queens community. QSO has established numerous programs that enhance the musical offerings to the borough of Queens, presenting 10 to 20 concerts throughout the year, serving 30,000 residents, including 8,000 youth. The Masterworks Concert Series in our artistic home, Queensborough Performing Arts Center, provides access to outstanding, high-quality classical concerts for Queens residents at discounted and affordable prices. QSO's Concerts on the Green -- free summer parks series -- offers classical, pops, Broadway and opera selections in beautiful park settings throughout the borough. The Music on the Move! Chamber Series showcases QSO musicians in ensemble performances in various venues, such as libraries and senior centers free of charge. The Arts-In-Education program educates the youth of Queens, reaching more than 8,000 children each year, and at no expense to the students or schools. Musicians/teaching artists provide in-class workshops; chamber ensembles give in-school presentation performances; and the AIE program culminates in Young People's Concerts. At these concerts, students travel to a performance hall to experience a live, professional symphonic concert with the emphasis placed on orchestral music in an educational and interactive format. The return of the Young Soloist Competition gives young instrumentalists the opportunity to win cash prizes and be a soloist with the orchestra, exhibiting the musical skills and talent of the area's youth to the community. And the brand-new, free, family-friendly educational series Symphony 101 launched November 2009 in partnership with the Queens Public Library. Maestro Kitsopoulos hosts this series featuring live music presentations by QSO musicians.
About Musica Reginae
Musica Reginae Productions is dedicated to the belief that the people of Queens deserve to have first-rate classical and contemporary music available to them in their home communities and that they need not travel into Manhattan to find enriching experiences. The founders of MRP believe that Queens is capable of supporting more performances of classical music; that music can serve as an important bridge in an ethnically diverse community by acknowledging various heritages; and that a lack of abundant, locally available, classical music deprives Queens school children of important educational advantages. Musica Reginae exists to produce quality performances that engage, educate and entertain the citizens of Queens and draw them into an appreciation of the classical music and the diverse cultures in our borough. Our ultimate aim is to develop an audience that will improve the social cohesiveness and quality of life in our community.
