New York, NY – Chamber and electroacoustic music of Judith Shatin will be presented at venues in Copenhagen, Denmark and Salt Lake City, Utah in the coming week:

Monday, January 25 – 7:30 PM – Tower of the Eight Winds for violin and piano will be performed by the Borup-Ernst Duo, Hasse Borup, violin and Mary Kathleen Ernst, piano for the Roskilde Chamber Music Society at the Jakobskirchen, Astersvej 11 in Roskilde (Copenhagen), Denmark.

Tower of the Eight Winds, named for the Tower of the Winds, still standing below the Acropolis in the ancient Roman agora in Athens, refers to the gods of the winds depicted in friezes at the tower’s top. At the time of its premiere the Washington Post said: “"Tower of the Eight Winds," … stood out for its acuity and engaging vivacity.” More about it at http://www.judithshatin.com/detail.php?compid=163.

Wednesday, January 27 – 7:30 PM – For the Birds for amplified cello and electronic playback will be performed by Madeleine Shapiro at Dumke Recital Hall of the University of Utah School of Music, 204 David P. Gardner Hall, 1375 E Presidents Circle in Salt Lake, City, Utah.

For the Birds, for amplified cello and electronics, is an homage to the birds of the Yellowstone region as well as a play on Cage’s book of that name. Rather than imitate the sounds of the natural world in music, the composer includes them, sometimes clearly, sometimes digitally transformed beyond recognition. The piece was commissioned by cellist Madeleine Shapiro (http://www.modernworks.com/index.html). More about it at http://www.judithshatin.com/detail.php?compid=103.
