Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra - The French Suite of Europe
PBO is thrilled to welcome Jordi Savall back to conduct a concert of beautiful French Baroque music. The first half of the program features lively and graceful ballet music by violinist and dancer Guillaume Dumanoir and a suite of music from the opera Alceste by Jean-Baptiste Lully that tells the story of a bride’s abduction by a jealous suitor. Later in the program, Savall features Georg Philipp Telemann and George Frideric Handel, who were part of a generation of German composers fascinated by the richness and grace of the French musical style. In the Telemann suite, you have the incredible opportunity to hear Savall perform on the viola da gamba, which is rarely featured as a solo instrument with an orchestra. Handel’s beloved Water Music brings the rich orchestral colors of
the French ballet suite to full blossom, combining it with German musical sensibilities and a bit of an
English accent. Come see this extraordinary collaboration between one of the foremost early music
scholars and “the most exciting American period-instrument orchestra.”
