5th Eilat Festival for Chamber Music Hosts the World's Biggest Stars
Eilat Festival is an international chamber music festival that each year hosts internationally acclaimed musicians from all over the world. The artists come together to perform a variety of chamber concerts and to hold master classes for students arriving from Europe, USA, and the Far East.
The Festival takes place in Eilat, Israel’s southernmost city and leading tourist resort, visited by tens of thousands of visitors every year.
During its five years of existence, the Festival has become one of the most exciting and prestigious chamber music festivals in the world, hosting the world’s greatest musicians and attracting audiences from Israel and abroad.
Over the course of 10 days, the Festival will offer, in addition to the canonic classical repertoire, a variety of concerts and activities combining music, poetry, theater, and comedy. The Festival will host renowned artists from a variety of musical genres: classical, early, Gypsy, Celtic, and contemporary.
Featured in this year’s Festival is the visit of the Italian composer Fabio Vacchi for the performance of his work “Irini, Essalam, Shalom” – a work dedicated to the promotion of peace and condemnation of violence, combining texts in Greek, Arabic, and Hebrew taken from the Gospel, the Koran, and the Hebrew Bible. The work is written for symphonic orchestra, actor, and solo violin. The Italian actor Moni Ovadia and the violinist Pavel Vernikov, music director of the festival, will participate in the production.
Sir Roger Moore returns this year to the Festival to give a special concert dedicated to UNICEF’s efforts to prevent AIDS in Africa, along with violinist/conductor Aleksey Igudesman and the famous violinist Julian Rachlin. Sir Roger Moore, a special UNICEF ambassador since 1991, will dedicate his fee from this concert to the organization.
The renowned Polish composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki, who has received many awards for his compositions and activities, including the Wolf Award, a Grammy, and UNESCO award – will be a special guest of the Festival and will attend the performance of a few of his chamber works: a piano and violin sonata performed by Julian Rachlin and Itamar Golan and a duet for violin and viola performed by Julian Rachlin and Benjamine Marquise.
The Eilat Festival is proud to host this year the internationally acclaimed Israeli author Amos Oz, who will read from his latest book of short stories Scenes from a Village Life, accompanied by the percussion duo PercaDu. Oz is currently collaborating with the composer Fabio Vacchi, who is writing an opera based on Oz’s book The Same Sea (1999).
Aleksey Igudesman – violinist, conductor, composer, and comedian, well known for his virtuoso and surprising performances and interpretations to classical works, will take a major part in the festival: he will conduct the special evening dedicated to UNICEF, “Violin of the World” along with Sir Roger Moore and others. The evening will feature duets and poems written by Igudesman and read by Sir Moore. The musical works are influenced by Celtic, Eastern European, and Latin music, and include humorous bits alongside more serious contents. Another curious evening will be “A Crazy Night in Eilat,” including funny and crazy pieces written by Igudesman and performed by him in Klezmer and Celtic styles, by Pavel Vernikov (classical violin), Roman Yanoska (Jazz violin), Roby Lakatos (gypsy violin) and with the Festival orchestra; another interesting concert will be the performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, conducted by Igudesman and played by Fumiaki Miura, winner of the Fifth International Hanover Violin Competition (2009).
The gypsy band of the virtuoso violinist Roby Lakatos will present an exciting and passionate Hungarian Gypsy evening. Lakatos is a descendant of a famous dynasty of Hungarian gypsy violinists, and is often referred to as the “Devil’s Fiddler.” Another world music event will be "Tango Fuego" – a passionate tango concert played by the international Pitango Quartet.
The vocal/instrumental Early Music Ensemble Hortus Musicus from Estonia will play in an evening of early music. Hortus Musicus are the oldest constantly active early music group in Europe, founded in 1972 by the violinist/conductor Andres Mustonen, who is the ensemble’s music director and conductor. The ensemble performs early music from all over the world: Europe, the Far East, India, the Middle East, and more.
In addition, the Festival will present chamber music masterpieces by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, R. Strauss, Schumann, Brahms, Mozart, Handel, Shostakovich, Piazolla, and many others. These will be performed by chamber ensembles comprised of the world’s greatest classical musicians: Julian Rachlin (violin), Mischa Maisky (cello), Gary Hoffman (cello), Salvatore Accardo (violin, conductor), Pavel Gililov (piano), Yuval Gotlibovich (viola), Michael Wolf (double bass), Konstantin Bogino (piano), Diemut Poppen (viola), Itamar Golan (piano), Tchaikovsky Trio, and many others.
There will also be a Family Concert, in which soloists will perform different duet works with family members: for example, Mischa Maisky and his daughter, Salvatore Accardo with his wife, and more.
A special Chopin Marathon will be held for the 200th anniversary of the composer.
This year’s Festival is bigger than in previous years and will last 10 days: during the two weekends, the festival will present more than 20 concerts and during the weekdays, the Festival’s soloists will hold master classes and workshops for students from all over the world.
All concerts will take place at the Golden Tulip Club Hall. Attached please find the complete program of the festival. www.eilat-festival.com
