BMOP/sound Celebrates Its Second GRAMMY Nomination

December 14, 2009 | By AMT PR
Derek Bermel: Voices for solo clarinet and orchestra has been recognized in the Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with Orchestra) category. This marks the second GRAMMY® nod in two years for BMOP/sound - Charles Fussell: Wilde was nominated in 2008 for Best Classical Vocal Performance.

“We are thrilled to have this CD nominated,” says Gil Rose, BMOP/sound’s Executive Producer. “It is a chance to celebrate our long collaboration with a truly one-of-a-kind artist.” For American clarinetist/composer Derek Bermel (b. 1967), this marks his first GRAMMY® nomination. “It's a huge honor to be included in this esteemed group of musicians,” says Bermel. “I'm grateful to BMOP and their conductor Gil Rose, who performed my music with such exquisite care and passion!”

Derek Bermel: Voices has been hailed as a “beautifully detailed” and “strikingly visceral” album that melds global traditions from the melodic roots of West Africa to the infectious grooves of Bulgarian folk music. As evident in Voices, Bermel is applauded for his creativity and theatricality as a composer and for his virtuosity as a performer. “His clarinetistry breaks every rule of classical playing and it stretches the accepted conventions of jazz playing to the outermost limits (American Record Guide).”

The 52nd Annual GRAMMY® Awards airs Sunday, January 31, 2010, on CBS.

BMOP/sound, the Grammy-nominated label of the acclaimed Boston Modern Orchestra Project, explores the evolution of the music formerly known as classical. The label’s ‘08 recordings received several accolades including “Best of 2008” CD nods by American Record Guide, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, National Public Radio, Time Out New York, and Downbeat Magazine. Recent 2009 releases have included Derek Bermel: Voices (Feb); David Rakowski: Winged Contraption (Mar); John Harbison: Full Moon in March (Apr); and Louis Andriessen: La Passione (Jun).
