| Georgia Symphony Orchestra presents America, Vol. 4 |

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra will proudly partner with regional African-American organizations in presenting America,Vol 4 concerts this month. In keeping with their mission of presenting relevant music to the entire community, the GSO will collaborate with:

• Uzee Brown Society of Choraliers
• Georgia Spiritual Ensemble
• Dr. Uzee Brown
• Dr. Oral Moses
• Theresa Price
• Nicole Carr of WSBTV
The GSO Chorus will join with the partner choristers to form a tremendous voice ensemble to power the performance, which will present a range of music offerings from outbursts of spiritual joy to the exploration of social justice. Featuring the music of African-American composers, this concert includes the world premiere of Moonlight Waltz by the GSO’s own N. E. Wheeler, the Georgia premiere of Daniel Bernard Roumain’s Human Songs and Stories and the Georgia premiere of William Grant Still’s And They Lynched Him on a Tree. |

Following its critically acclaimed first season, Bard Music West returns April 6 and 7, 2018 with a deep dive into the life, influences, and legacy of Bay Area visionary Henry Cowell (1897-1965). One of the great Bay Area innovators, Cowell transformed the musical landscape of his time. Over two days, experience glorious early American choral music; heart-thumping works for percussion; classical Persian music; the premiere of an experimental fusion of music and dance; and rarely heard works by Cowell and his contemporaries. With three performances and a talk, delve into Cowell’s fascinating life and influences and explore the evolution of American music. Bard Music West is a project of the Bard Music Festival, the critically-acclaimed Hudson Valley summer festival of Bard College that has examined the life, influences, and music of a single composer each year since 1990. |

Choreographer Miro Magloire's New Chamber Ballet pays homage to Claude Debussy on this 100th anniversary of the great composer's death with a world premiere ballet by resident choreographer Constantine Baecher, former member of the Royal Danish Ballet. By Magloire is his "Two Friends," to Debussy's whirlwind violin sonata, and two dances to music by Kaija Saariaho. All music played live by pianist Melody Fader and violinist Doori Na. |

Karlheinz Stockhausen’s final epic, KLANG: The 24 Hours of the Day, will be presented in full by Analog Arts and Elizabeth Huston. Intended to include 24 pieces but left incomplete at the time of Stockhausen’s death, this 21-part work gives space to meditate on time, spirituality, and reality, allowing the audience to reflect on the meaning of mortality. KLANG is the final, epic statement of one of the 20th century’s most important composers. It charts the journey of the soul from the body into the afterlife, and is a fitting capstone to Stockhausen’s massive career. The music ranges from intimate chamber pieces to virtuosic displays and electronic extravaganzas. This production features performances by Cologne’s MusikFabrik, light paintings by Thomas Dunn, and sound projection by Dolf Kamper. A break room with stimulating conversations, lectures, and a cash bar will be available. |

The Virginia Opera concludes its season with the most famous of all bel canto operas, Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic Lucia di Lammermoor. This intense tale of star-crossed lovers revolves around two feuding Scottish families, the Ravenwoods and the Lammermoors. Lucia di Lammermoor loves Edgardo Ravenwood, but when her brother’s political activity put him at odds with the king, he decides to reestablish his family’s status by forcing Lucia into an arranged marriage that culminates in the most spectacular mad scene in all of opera. Metropolitan Opera soprano Rachele Gilmore makes her Virginia Opera debut in the title role of Lucia, a woman at her emotional breaking point. Complementing her as Edgardo is tenor Joseph Dennis, also in his Virginia Opera debut. Don’t miss this dramatic masterpiece of thwarted love and dashed expectations. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. |
