On May 1, 2008, New York Philomusica presents “The String Quartet,” a showcase of quartets from Joseph Haydn, Michael Berkeley, Antonin Dvořák, and Ludwig van Beethoven. The concert will take place at 8 pm, with a pre-concert lecture at 7:30. Location: Broadway Presbyterian Church, 114th Street and Broadway, New York, NY.
PROGRAM:
Joseph Haydn’s Quartet in g minor, Op. 74, No. 3 (1793); Antonin Dvořák’s Selections from Cypresses, B.152 (1887); Michael Berkeley’s Quartet No. 1 (1981); and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Quartet No. 5 in A, Op. 18, No. 5.

31st annual competition, in memory of Canadian composer S.C. Eckhardt-Gramatté. Promotes Canadian and contemporary music and emerging young performers. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents between ages 18 & 30 (35 for voice). 1st prize $5,000, 1 week residency at the Banff Centre, & nat'l tour (pays add'l ca. $5,000); 2nd prize $3,000; 3rd prize $2,000. This festival, which will be launched at Americas Society on May 2nd, will feature music by nine established, and emerging composers living in Mexico and the U.S. in concerts, lectures, and public talks throughout New York City. Composers include Julio Estrada and Víctor Adán. |

Atlanta Chamber Players, now in their 32nd season, are proud to inaugurate their "Chamber Music in Art Spaces" series on Sunday, May 4, 7:30 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. The collaborative program entitled "Modern Masters" will showcase the best of contemporary chamber music featuring works by Debussy, Martinu and Schoenberg while surrounded by works of renowned visual artists. “We are eager to bring these great Modern Masters to the modern art galleries of MOCA GA," said Paula Peace, artistic director and pianist for ACP. "How exciting it will be to hear contemporary chamber music performed in MOCA's new TULA Arts Center location. The setting will be quite intimate, while surrounded by world-class works of art."
