Watts Plays Beethoven |
|
Considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century and a perennial favorite guest of Pacific Symphony, André Watts returns to the stage with one of Beethoven’s most beloved works – the "Emperor Concerto." A work prized for its serene and tender second movement, Beethoven’s last piano concerto is a testament to the composer’s emotional range. Shostakovich complements the evening with his intense 10th Symphony.

CIACCONA The Bass Of Time - violinist Robyn Bolliger |
|
Versatile young violinist Robyn Bollinger, 2016 Leonore Annenberg Fellowship recipient, performs a daring solo concern in the Gardner’s sonic cube. Featuring works spanning three centuries by four composers: Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber's Passacaglia; Johann Sebastian Bach's Ciaccona from Partita No. 2 in d minor; Béla Bartók's Tempo di Ciaccona from Sonata for Solo Violin; and Luciano Berio's Sequenza VIII. Incorporating multi-media historical presentations and live personal narratives with musical performance, CIACCONA tells the story of one of music’s most ancient compositional ideas – the development of a simple repeating bass line – through the lens of solo violin repertoire. |

Marika Hughes: The New String Quartet |
|
At a time when so much of our existence is digital, stripping ourselves of our 21st century trappings begins to feel like something new again. Marika Hughes turns her sonic attentions to her roots and live acoustic sound.
Marika Hughes has returned to her chamber music background with her new project, The New String Quartet. Alongside Charlie Burnham (violin and voice) Marvin Sewell (guitar) and Rashaan Carter (bass), the band sets out to celebrate the sounds, vibrations and resonances of acoustic, unamplified, raw strings. Rooted in the standards of the western string quartet tradition, The New String Quartet's setlist will also weave throughout Marika’s varied musical heritage; from classical and jazz songs to pop music and impromptu sketches. With a selection of songs both old and new, Marika and The New String Quartet tip their hats to love, to loss, to family and to gratitude. |

PERFORMANCE
PRESS PLAY BACKWARDS
WEDNESDAY MAY 30, 07:30 PM
ShareThis
Press Play Backwards is a new work written by Irish vocalist Lauren Kinsella in collaboration with the Brooklyn-based, Austrian pianist Elias Stemeseder. The work is a cross-disciplinary music theatre piece that uses sung and spoken text, original composition, and stage movement directed by the New York-based artist, choreographer and dancer K.J Holmes.
Press Play Backwards is an opera for two improvisers, inspired by the ancient Greeks' concept of time, Chronos/Kairos, and the writings of the late Irish poet and author John O'Donohue. The piece explores both a collective and personal response to the creative being of visceral and physical memory. Join us on May 30 for the premiere of this work, marking the culmination of research and development over the last year and a half supported by Kinsella's Arts Foundation Fellowship, whose support she greatly acknowledges. |

Until Our Hearts Stop |
|
“A Bauschian take on intimacy…. The performers gasp, pant and get squashed. They pull their clothes on and off. The manic succession of intimacies – lick this, bite this – mocks the rigidly sequential choreography of porn...But it’s all done with a bouncy good cheer.” – the Guardian (U.K.)
NYU Skirball will present the U.S. premiere of Meg Stuart/Damaged Goods’ Until Our Hearts Stop, choreographed by Meg Stuart, on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 pm.
In UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP, six performers and a three-piece, onstage jazz band, find themselves in an unreliable, high-octane refuge, both nightclub and an arena: a place of desire and illusion, experiencing extreme intimacy at each other’s hands.
Note: This performance contains graphic nudity and is recommended for ages 18+.
Until Our Hearts Stop will play two performances on Friday, May 4 and Saturday May 5 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at www.nyuskirball.org, by phone at 212.998.4941, or in person at the Box O |

Bloomingdale School of Music Presents
Variations
A Free Concert Featuring Pianist Anna Khanina
Friday, May 4, 2018 @ 7:00pm
Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) is pleased to present pianist and faculty member Anna Khanina in a solo concert entitled Variations on Friday, May 4th at 7:00 pm. This free concert open to the community will be held at the school's home site located at 323 West 108th Street in Manhattan. Seating is limited.
BSM piano faculty member Anna Khanina explores the variation form in works by great composers of the romantic era. One of the most imaginative musical forms, variations are similar to improvisation in that a main idea is presented then reshaped and embellished while never losing its relationship to the original theme. Works by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov and Chopin.
Russian born and raised in Germany, Anna Khanina has been praised for her “brilliant technique, musicality, and irreproachable taste.” |

Monteverdi Echoes - Venice to Vienna |
|
Early Music Foundation Presents
Early Music New York | Frederick Renz, Director
MONTEVERDI ECHOES | Venice to Vienna
The ‘new’ Italian style of Monteverdi and his contemporaries, blossoming at the turn of the 17th century, quickly made its way across the Alps, as Italians were engaged by Austrian and German courts. In addition to Monteverdi, composers will include Biber, whose "Battalia" has been an audience favorite for almost 350 years, and Farina, whose "Capriccio stravagante" features a veritable carnival of the animals.
