The Quintet of the Americas will present “Borrowing the Theme,” a concert on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at The Flushing Library Auditorium, 41-17 Main Street in Flushing, Queens, New York. Special guest artist will be Gaudencio Thiago de Mello, organic percussion. The Quintet will present a concert based on themes borrowed from TV soundtracks, older music and sounds from nature. "Mozart Fantasy," a new work by Douglaston composer James Cohn, will be featured. Also featured will be new works by Brazilian composer Gaudencio Thiago de Mello. Rob Paterson's “Suburban Waltz Fantasy”, filled with theme songs from old TV shows, Elliott Schwartz' “Bird Bath” which includes bird calls and quotes of other pieces related to birds, Concerto No. 2 after Vivaldi (originally for organ) arranged for wind quintet by Mordechai Rechtman, a suite of Brazilian Songs by Ernesto Nazareth and As Proesas de Nolasco by Pixinguinha will also be performed. This concert is free and open to the public.

The Young Artist Competition, WAMSO's longest running education program, discovers and encourages exceptional young musical talent through a regional competition. Young performers come from eleven Midwest states and two Canadian provinces. These performers can win scholarships and monetary awards, as well as an opportunity to perform with the Minnesota Orchestra. The competition celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and promote accomplished young musicians and to provide opportunities for advanced study. Contestants must be performers of instruments that have permanent chairs in the Minnesota Orchestra and be legal residents or students in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Manitoba or Ontario. Contestants must not have reached their 26th birthday as of the date of the final competition.

The Lennox Young Artists Competition is sponsored by the Richardson Symphony Orchestra through a generous gift by Lennox International, Inc. The competition is open to serious pianists or string instrumentalists ages 13-19 as of January 6, 2007. (Applicants may not be enrolled in a college degree program.) First place winners in each division receive a cash award of $1,000 and a performance with the Richardson Symphony on March 3, 2007. Second place winners receive $500 and third place receives $300. Audition tapes and a non-refundable entry fee of $35 should be postmarked by November 20, 2006. A competitor’s notification of acceptance as a semi-finalist will be mailed by December 9, 2006. The Nova Vista Symphony announces auditions for Principal Flute, Utility/Fourth horn, and all strings. The orchestra rehearses Tuesday nights in Campbell (with occasional Wednesday string rehearsals) and performs its concerts Saturday nights, usually at Foothill College. Typically the orchestra plays four major concerts each year, plus a children's concert and occasional other performances. Auditions will be held starting on January 9, 2007. Chorus America will hold a Conducting Masterclass for Conductors of Children/Youth Choruses, January 11-13, 2007, in San Francisco. What a Neighborhood! presents a bilingual celebration of Upper West Side composers, including two with their musical roots in the popular music of Argentina and Puerto Rico: Fernando Otero and Marcos de Jesus. Sarasota Opera's 2007 Winter Opera Festival opens with one of the world's most popular operas and beloved heroines. Puccini's Madama Butterfly is the story of the Japanese geisha who marries and is then abandoned by an American naval officer. This tragic tale contains some of opera's most romantic and affecting music, including the famous aria "Un bel dì." This masterwork returns to Sarasota Opera for the first time since 1994 in a new production.
