2007: Towards the Islands - Sounds across the Sea
Since ancient times, islands floating all over the world’s oceans and seas have been the passage route for traders, explorers and travelers. With the coming and going of the peoples, traces of different cultures also passed by the islands that became an encounter place where native and overseas cultures blend together.
This year’s 23rd Tokyo Summer Festival is rowing through space and time to portray the musical mosaic of various islands from around the globe. |

SO MUCH HAPPENED BEFORE DOROTHY DROPPED IN. Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald-green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two unlikely friends end up as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most spellbinding new musical in years. When WICKED opened on Broadway, it worked its magic on critics and audiences alike. Winner of 15 major awards including the Grammy® and three Tony® Awards. Today, WICKED is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” exclaims The New York Times. “If every musical had the brain, the heart and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.” — Richard Zoglin, Time Magazine |

"Buechner is one of those rare ones who obviously has won her imposing list of major awards for the right reasons. She plays the piano lovingly, the tone and phrasing beguiling and grateful, the facility fluent. Her musicality was persuasive as she shaped this music of quiet but deep-thought passion with its flickering play of feelings .... A very satisfying and elevating performance."

In September 1983, Father Duggan won first prize in the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition for pianists in Washington D.C., which entitled him, among other honors, to various concerts around the country and a two-month tour of Germany. In 1985, he gave complete performances of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier in New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Birmingham to critical acclaim. In 1991 he participated again in the Bach Competition in Washington D.C.; this time he was one of three first-place winners, and this entitled him to another round of concert engagements and a second tour of Germany. Throughout the year 2000, Father Duggan performed the complete cycle of Bach's keyboard works eight times in a series of fifteen recitals.
Father Duggan is presently on the piano faculty at the State University of New York at Fredonia and on the faculty of the Golandsky Institute.

Gülsin Onay — "an exceptional pianist, endowed with virtuosic brilliance and boundless energy, and an interpretive power both intelligent and emotionally sensitive" — has recorded 18 albums that illustrate the breadth of her repertoire as well as her interpretive power. Her live CD of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 with the Slovak Philharmonic has been acclaimed as a milestone by critics and virtuosi alike.
Highly acclaimed by musicians and critics alike for her Rachmaninov interpretations, Gülsin Onay is also recognised internationally as an exceptional Chopin performer; the Polish nation is honoring her with the award of a State Medal for her Chopin interpretations. She is acknowledged worldwide as the finest interpreter of the music of A Adnan Saygun, whose works feature prominently in her concerts and recordings, and whose Piano Concerto No.2 (which she has premiered in Turkey and abroad) was dedicated to her.
Program will include works by Schumann, Mendelssohn, Elgar, Chopin, Saygun, and Ravel. |
