Saturday welcomes the Shanghai String Quartet performing Mendelssohn: String Quartet in E Flat Major, Opus 12; Yi-Wen Jiang: Selections from Chinasong; and Brahms: String Quartet in C Minor, Opus 51 #1. The Quartet’s most popular disc, Chinasong, is a collection of Chinese folk songs arranged by Violinist Yi-Wen Jiang reflecting on his childhood memories of the Cultural Revolution in China.

2017–2018 T. Gordon Parks Concerto Competition |

The Arapahoe Philharmonic of Littleton, Colorado (a Denver suburb), in support of its ongoing mission to give recognition to young talent in the classical music field, announces the opening of its 47th T. Gordon Parks Collegiate Concerto Competition.
This season's competition is for orchestral string players (violin, viola, cello, bass) and harp between the ages of 18 and 25 as of February 10, 2018. Only full-time high school seniors and college undergraduate/graduate students from schools in Colorado and its seven surrounding states (Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma) are eligible to apply.
The first application round is a recorded submission. The final round is live held on Saturday, November 11, 2017, in Littleton, Colorado. View full requirements on the Arapahoe Philharmonic's website. |

Composer John Adams and librettist/director Peter Sellars discusstheir newest collaboration with San Francisco Opera GeneralDirector Matthew Shilvock. With a libretto drawn from original sources by director Peter Sellars, Girls of the Golden West explores the dramatic and often brutal stories of pioneers on California's Gold Rush frontier during the early 1850s. This discussion will also include set designer David Gropman along with J'Nai Bridges and Hye Jung Lee, accompanied by pianist John Churchwell.

American Lyric Theater presents The New Crew, a salon including performances by and discussions with American Lyric Theater's newest Resident Artists in the Composer Librettist Development Program: composers Shuying Li, Andy Teirstein, and Liliya Ugay; librettists Lorene Cary, Julian Crouch, and Lila Palmer; and dramaturg Antigoni Gaitana.
This special event is hosted by ALT's founder and producing artistic director, Lawrence Edelson, and launches the 10th Anniversary of the CLDP. The performances will feature Glenn Seven Allen, Emily Tweedy, Katrina Thurman, Kristina Bachrach, Naaz Hosseini, and Bénédicte Jourdois, and the salon will be followed by a wine and cheese reception with Resident Artists and members of the CLDP Faculty.

The program features Cahill in Harrison's Concerto for Piano with Javanese Gamelan, Gandelsman in Harrison's Suite for Violin and American Gamelan, and the world premiere of Evan Ziporyn's By the Numbers, an homage to Harrison for violin, clarinet, and piano. The Momenta String Quartet and the New Chamber Ballet will present "Stray Bird," a music/dance tribute to visionary composer Ursula Mamlok. Quartet members are Emilie-Anne Gendron, Alex Shiozaki, Stephanie Griffin, and Michael Haas, and they will be joined by Cree Carrico, soprano; Martha Cargo, flute; Carlos Cordeiro, clarinet; and Dan Lippel, guitar. Seven chamber music works by Mamlok will be performed, with original choreography by Miro Magloire and the team of Rebecca Walden and Mara Driscoll. Ursula Mamlok was born in Berlin to a Jewish family. As a teenager she fled the Nazis, first to Ecuador, then NY, and finally returned to live in Berlin, where she passed away last year at the age of 93. Performances are Oct. 5 at 7 & 8:30 PM and October 6 at 6:30 & 8:30 PM. Performances are free, but reservations are required. Following the NY performances, the companies will tour to Germany, where Stray Bird will open the Jewish Cultural Festival in Magdeburg on October 14th. |

Quartet members are Emilie-Anne Gendron, Alex Shiozaki, Stephanie Griffin, and Michael Haas, and they will be joined by Cree Carrico, soprano; Martha Cargo, flute; Carlos Cordeiro, clarinet; and Dan Lippel, guitar. Seven chamber music works by Mamlok will be performed, with original choreography by Miro Magloire and the team of Rebecca Walden and Mara Driscoll. Ursula Mamlok was born in Berlin to a Jewish family. As a teenager she fled the Nazis, first to Ecuador, then NY, and finally returned to live in Berlin, where she passed away last year at the age of 93. Performances are Oct. 5 at 7 & 8:30 PM and October 6 at 6:30 & 8:30 PM. Performances are free, but reservations are required. Following the NY performances, the companies will tour to Germany, where Stray Bird will open the Jewish Cultural Festival in Magdeburg on October 14th. |

The Young Musicians Foundation's Debut Chamber Orchestra (DCO) will open its 2017-18 concert season with Flow, featuring works inspired by water and paying homage to the centennial of Leonard Bernstein. The program includes Bernstein's On the Waterfront: Symphonic Suite; Bedr?ich Smetana's Vltava (The Moldau); and Claude Debussy's La Mer. Now celebrating its 63rd season, the DCO, currently led by Lawrence N. Field Conductor-in-Residence Yuga Cohler, is one of the oldest pre-professional training orchestras in the country. Composed of approximately 70 talented musicians ages 15-25 from across the Los Angeles area, the orchestra hones the skills of students who are on the cusp of professional careers. Alumni of the orchestra perform today in virtually every major symphony orchestra in the country. |

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary year, this ethnically diverse group of classical musicians will perform selections from Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon, Tchaikovsky, and Dvo?ák. This concert will feature pianist Joseph Joubert, violinists Joyce Hammann and Belinda Whitney, violist Tia Allen and cellist Clay Ruede.
