“When Anne-Sophie Mutter plays, you listen” (The Times). Few musicians have enjoyed a career as long and prolific as violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who has captivated audiences all over the world with her profound recordings and enlightening live performances. Now the “undisputed queen of violin-playing” (as heralded by The Times) makes her Cincinnati debut opening the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s 2013-2014 season. On Saturday, September 28 at 8 p.m., Ms. Mutter hits the Music Hall stage, performing two beloved works by Dvo?ák: the Romance for Violin as well as his Violin Concerto. (Ms. Mutter recently recorded the Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic; the disc is expected to be released in the coming months.) | The Heirs of Tantalus: From the House of Atreus to the Palace of Nero |
|
|
Thursday, 9/19 & Saturday, 9/21
8:00pm
The Heirs of Tantalus
From the House of Atreus to the Palace of Nero
Jessica Gould, soprano & Jose Lemos, countertenor
Jory Vinikour, harpsichord & Deborah Fox, theorbo
Members of The Sebastians
Script and Stage Direction by Erica Gould
Guest Actors, featuring Ethan Peck as Orestes and Steven Rattazzi as Suetonius
Greek myth and Roman history refracted through the prism of the baroque, The Heirs of Tantalus weaves words of the Greek tragedies of Aeschylus and Euripides, biting commentary of the Roman historian Suetonius, and music of Monteverdi, Scarlatti and Handel into a depraved tapestry of hubris, blood-lust, and vengence.
With music from the operas L'Incoronazione di Poppea and Agrippina, and the cantatas Io Son Nerone and Agrippina Condotta a Morire, three actors and two singers take on multiple roles in this site-specific performance, staged at a repurposed bank originally designed to replicate a Roman temple. |

| Fidelio |
|
|
September 20 – October 6, 2013 in the Cabot Theatre
Music by Ludwig van Beethoven
Libretto by Joseph Ferdinand von Sonnleither, Stefan von Breuning & Georg Friedrich Treischke
Stage and Music Direction by Viswa Subbaraman
Our new Artistic Director, Viswa Subbaraman will open his very first production at Skylight with a unique staging of the tale of Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven. A timeless story that deals with love, freedom, the purity of purpose and of course mistaken identity; Skylight turns this work on its head by setting it as a classic Bollywood film! Subbaraman will combine Beethoven’s dramatic score with a moving chorus of colorfully dressed Indian dances on a set designed by the modern artist Raghava KK. The Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek will also collaborate with Skylight as they transcend culture, society and ethnicity, ultimately showing we all share similar values. Skylight will perform Fidelio in English. |

MOZART String Quintet in C Major, K. 515
MOZART String Quintet in G Minor, K. 516
Internationally-renowned Baroque violinist, Juilliard Historical Performance artistic advisor and artist-in-residence Monica Huggett leads a program of select string quintets by Mozart and his colleague and friend, Czech composer Myslivecek. Upon programming these works, Ms. Huggett remarked, "it is generally accepted that the combination of two violins, two violas, and cello inspired Mozart to compose chamber music of paralleled beauty and depth...The string quintet was a relatively rare combination at that time, but Myslivecek composed some light-hearted pieces in that genre which may have sown the seed in Mozart's imagination"

Nawal: the Voice of Comoros in concert at Alwan for the Arts
Between traditional and contemporary, Nawal’s compositions are an acoustic roots-based fusion, a reflection of the diverse character of the Comoros and beyond. Indo-Arabian-Persian music meets Bantu polyphonies and rhythms mixed with Sufi trance. Nawal sings mostly in Comorian (Shikomor) a language in the Swahili family, also with French, English and Arabic. Nawal sings in favor of all humans, for education and for union. She also conserves the philosophy of her great grandfather Al Maarouf, a grand Sufi master, who was inspired by the light of Islam |
