Canadian Conductor Charles Cozens Finds Cuban Guest-Conducting Experience “a revelation”

Charles Cozens recounts his adventure as the first Canadian guest conductor of a Cuban orchestra, at www.musicaltoronto.org/2013/07/03/canadian-conductor-charles-cozens-cuban-adventure-a-revelation-of-kinship-and-love. A standing ovation from both the public and orchestra and an invitation to return to Cuba’s second-largest city rewarded Maestro Cozens in his Cuban debut this past spring. He conducted the 65-piece Villa Clara Symphony Orchestra in the provincial capital, Santa Clara, in a program of orchestral dance works. The concert included two of Cozens’ compositions – Les Petites Danses Démoniques and Czardahora, with the orchestra’s principal clarinet and concertmaster as soloists. Both were well received as was Cozens’ Homage a Piazzolla, a tapestry of Astor Piazzolla compositions for violin and orchestra. Maestro Cozens describes the visit as “a joyful experience musically. It was also one filled with admiration for the musicians and general population.”
