HK Gruber, Composer
Alan Gilbert, Conductor
Doug Fitch, Director/Designer
Giants Are Small, Production.
In collaboration with The Juilliard School
"This isn’t grand opera but a brilliant change from the traditionally tried and trusted. If contemporary opera can poke fun at its own traditions so successfully, the audience is jolly lucky!" —Hamburger Abendblatt
From the brilliant creative duo Alan Gilbert (New York Philharmonic) and Doug Fitch comes a rollicking new production about race and diet: a parable about life, food, and our own delusions set to the deliciously wicked and singular musical dialect of HK Gruber.

The Great Dictator |
|
Charlie Chaplin's 1940 first feature-length "talkie" spotlights a satirical dictator whose demise is brought about by a Jewish barber who bears a striking resemblance to the tyrannical leader. In "The Great Dictator", Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. The Great Dictator boldly targeted the fascist leader before the United States' official entry into World War II, and is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin's famously impassioned plea for tolerance.

As one of the most dramatic and powerful pieces of music ever written, it's no wonder that Carmina Burana pops up so often in movie soundtracks, TV commercials and video games. Orff's massive choral work caps a musical search for life's meanings, including John Williams' celebratory theme from "Empire of the Sun" and Kathy Bowen's emotive echoes of the Holocaust.

The piece is a madrigal comedy from 1594 that sets a commedia dell' arte scenario in the late 16th-century madrigal style. It might be the earliest musical comedy ever written. Lecture: Jeff Halper, Director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) |
|
In 1997, Jeff Halper co-founded ICAHD to challenge and resist the Israeli policy of demolishing Palestinian homes and to organize Israelis, Palestinians, and international volunteers to jointly rebuild demolished homes. ICAHD also considers its resistance to house demolitions as a vehicle for exposing how the Israeli occupation works and with the ultimate aim of ending it.
As co-founder and director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and an anti-settlement peace activist dedicated to ending the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian territories, Halper will speak about Israel's policy of demolishing Palestinian homes and other structures as a way of pushing Palestinians off their land. He will also discuss the broader implications of the end of the Kerry talks, and perspectives for the fight for justice and peace in the region. |

Film Screening & Discussion: Alwan & 3rd i NY Present: The Uprising: the Arab Revolutions from the Inside |
|
The Uprising prvides an exploration of the Arab revolutions from the inside. It is a multi-camera, first-person account of that fragile, irreplaceable moment when life ceases to be a prison, and everything becomes possible again.
This feature-length documentary is composed entirely of videos made by citizens and long-term residents of Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, Syria and Yemen. The film uses this footage, not to recount the actual chronology of events or analyse their causes, but to create an imaginary pan-Arab uprising that exists (for the moment) only on the screen. |

Chelsea Opera presents The Tender Land by Aaron Copland |
|
Aaron Copland was one of the most important figures in American music during the second quarter of the twentieth century. Beginning in the mid-1930s, Copland made a serious effort to widen the audience for American music and took steps to change his style when writing pieces for different occasions. Such is the case of his opera, The Tender Land, composed in a style that so perfectly mirrors American folk idioms and cultural values. Though originally designed to reach a mass audience through television, the opera was never aired. It remains a work of great simplicity and charm, and Chelsea Opera believes that it is ideally suited to its intimate performance space.
The opera is sung in English accompanied by the Chelsea Opera Chamber Orchestra.

Antonin Dvorák—A Bohemian Idyll |
|
"Close Encounters ushers in the summer season in the Berkshires with a program devoted to Antonin Dvorák, whose music almost by definition glows with lyricism and melodiousness. We are never far, in this music (Piano Quintet and Dumky Trio), from the Czech countryside and a languid summer’s evening. His Biblical Songs, Gypsy Songs, and selections from the opera Rusalka, reflect another aspect of his output. Grammy Award winning mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, who captivated audiences in John Adams’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary (world premiere staging by Peter Sellars under Gustavo Dudamel) makes her Berkshire debut. “Smoky sound and riveting presence...""—The New York Times.
She is joined by two major international competition laureates, Itamar Zorman (Avery Fisher Award and Moscow) and Roman Rabinovich (Arthur Rubenstein). Major prize winners, a diva, and one of the most beloved figures in classical music.

Rameau’s 1748 acte de ballet is widely considered one of his greatest one-acts. In Ballot de Sovot’s libretto, based on Ovid, the sculptor Pygmalion creates a statue to which he professes his love, and which he asks Venus to bring to life. L’Amour (Cupid) arrives to praise Pygmalion’s artistry and faith in love, and animates the statue. The new production will dig deeper into the themes and lessons inherent in the myth. |

Opera AACC will tell the story of Georges Bizet’s popular opera, “Carmen,” from a wider perspective when the production is staged this June. Directed by Megan Morse Jans, a part-time instructor of performing arts, the opera will be sung in French, with English surtitles.
Morse Jans said that while most productions of the opera present the characters as one dimensional, the novella by Prosper Merimee, upon which the opera is based, shows the characters as complex. So, she has worked with the performers to create fuller characters that are products of the world in which they live, with their actions often consequences of their struggles to survive. The story revolves around the beautiful gypsy Carmen, a soldier Don José who loves her and a dashing bullfighter Escamillo, whom she loves. The opera has multiple side stories including smugglers, Carmen’s friends and other soldiers.
Tickets are $25 general admission; $15, senior citizens, groups, students and AACC employees; and $5 with valid AACC student ID |
