Flag Day Celebration – Benefit for Westwind Brass Educational Programs
SAN DIEGO — Of Thee We Sing: Come enjoy an evening of American music from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries while we celebrate our nation's Flag. This concert will also honor Brent Dutton, who will retire from his position as Tuba player after being with Westwind Brass since 1993. You will enjoy an evening of musical artistry, camaraderie, hors d'oeuvres and liquid refreshments. Your participation will help benefit Westwind Brass Educational outreach programs to the schools and community of San Diego County.
Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14. On that day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress issued a resolution that adopted the flag of the United States. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 that officially established June 14 as Flag Day and in August 1949 an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. |

The work for soprano, baritone and string quartet is based on letters exchanged between John Adams and his wife, Abigail, with whom he shared his aspirations, accomplishments and frustrations as he worked to secure financial support from the Dutch for the new nation emerging from a revolution. Abigail, his “dearest friend”, was not demure about expressing her feelings on things political, economic or domestic. She was an early feminist (“Don’t forget the women,” she wrote to John while the founding fathers were drafting the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia), abolitionist, mother and farm manager during John’s long absences. |

On Saturday, June 15th, and Sunday, June 16th, the adventurous orchestra The Knights and their conductor Eric Jacobsen will be joined by the Clarion Choir and conductor Steven Fox to perform a concert of Baroque and contemporary works at Bargemusic on Fulton Ferry Landing in Brooklyn.
Utilizing orchestra, choir, and combined forces, the program contrasts two great cantatas by J.S. Bach with works by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (b. 1935) and Hungarian composer György Kurtág (b. 1926). Both of the contemporary composers deeply loved -- and were influenced by -- Bach, yet these works reflect their willingness not only to break away from Baroque-influenced structures and soar off into expressions that manipulate and suspend time, and extend space, but also to balance and intermingle the rational and irrational.
J.S. Bach Cantata BWV 12: “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen”

To mark the centennial year of Stravinsky's iconic work, The Rite of Spring is a first collaboration featuring two Cultural Medallion recipients - Maestro Lim Yau and Choreographer Angela Liong.
A People's Stravinsky reinterprets the original work with staging that highlights people from the community in dramatic roles. It incorporates the creative energies of the elderly, children, and volunteers from the community with professional dancers and musicians, making it an exciting inter-disciplinary and multi-generational artistic endeavour.
The 1913 original work was created to capture the culture and rituals of old Russian rural communities. The reinterpretation of The Rite of Spring in the 21st century brings back the narratives of the community, grounding the iconic piece through an Asian perspective with rhythms of the seasons of life. |
