Clarion concludes its 2013-2014 season with three masterpieces that reveal both the virtuosity and versatility of Mozart’s final year, 1791. Artistic Director Steven Fox conducts The Clarion Orchestra in the sparkling Overture to The Magic Flute, followed by the final piano concerto No. 27 in B-flat major with Nimrod David Pfeffer making his Clarion debut on the fortepiano. In the second half, the Clarion Choir and soloists join the Orchestra for the Requiem. In addition to Mr. Pfeffer, who made solo debuts at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and with the Israeli Philharmonic in 2008, the evening’s soloists are soprano Lauren Snouffer of Houston Grand Opera, tenor Mario Chang, who recently made his Metropolitan Opera debut as the Italian Tenor in Rosenkavalier, and Phillip Cutlip, a seasoned soloist with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and New York City Opera. They join highly regarded singers of the New York Early Music scene: Molly Quinn, Virginia Warnken, Luthien Brackett, and Jesse Blumberg.

As part of the 18th Virginia Arts Festival (VAF), Joshua Bell will perform Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole with its Spanish themes and deep, rich notes composed for the violin. JoAnn Falletta, Conductor of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO), describes Joshua Bell as “so passionate, so completely committed to excellence that he inspires us all” (Ovations!). In a finale the VSO will perform An Alpine Symphony composed by Richard Strauss as his music tells the story of a sunrise to sunset alpine climb. The strength of the music describes the sights and sounds and the powerful impact of Strauss’ memorable climb. This symphonic piece will be performed with the "harmonious mix of image art with sound art" (Abendzeitung München) as breathtaking images by German photographer Tobias Melle are projected above the stage.

Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen will perform a free concert of his "Mystery Variations,"a collection of 31 variations for solo cello based on Giuseppe Colombi's Chiacona per basso solo, one of the oldest known pieces for the cello. Celebrated contemporary composers were invited to create variations for this unique work, including Esa Pekka Salonen, Mark Neikrug, Steven Stucky, and Kaija Saaiaho. The performance celebrates the presentation by the American Scandinavian Foundation of its highest honor, the Gold Medal, to the Sibelius Academy, Finland's internationally renowned center for musical education.

Continuing EM/NY's concert season of Eastern European (Polish & Czech) repertoire and influence, director Frederick Renz has unearthed programmatic instrumental pieces entitled, "Polnischer Sackpfeiffen" (Polish Bagpipes) and "Sonata Jocunda" (A Jocose Sonata), illustrating the integration of native folk tunes/dances with the prevailing Italian style. Mezzo soprano Catherine Hedberg will sing Heinrich Schütz's "Erbarm dich" and Stanis?aw Sylwester Szarzy?ski's "Jesu spes mea" accompanied by the EM/NY string band (sextet) and its contingent of continuo players (lute/theorbo, guitar, harp accompaniment) to evoke 17th-century echoes from across the Alps.

Max Lifchitz celebrates the Cinco de Mayo Holiday performing a program entirely devoted to piano music by Mexican composers. Featured will be works by Carlos Chavez, Manuel Enriquez, Manuel M.
