KLANG |
|
Karlheinz Stockhausen’s final epic, KLANG: The 24 Hours of the Day, will be presented in full by Analog Arts and Elizabeth Huston. Intended to include 24 pieces but left incomplete at the time of Stockhausen’s death, this 21-part work gives space to meditate on time, spirituality, and reality, allowing the audience to reflect on the meaning of mortality. KLANG is the final, epic statement of one of the 20th century’s most important composers. It charts the journey of the soul from the body into the afterlife, and is a fitting capstone to Stockhausen’s massive career. The music ranges from intimate chamber pieces to virtuosic displays and electronic extravaganzas. This production features performances by Cologne’s MusikFabrik, light paintings by Thomas Dunn, and sound projection by Dolf Kamper. A break room with stimulating conversations, lectures, and a cash bar will be available. |

The Virginia Opera concludes its season with the most famous of all bel canto operas, Gaetano Donizetti’s tragic Lucia di Lammermoor. This intense tale of star-crossed lovers revolves around two feuding Scottish families, the Ravenwoods and the Lammermoors. Lucia di Lammermoor loves Edgardo Ravenwood, but when her brother’s political activity put him at odds with the king, he decides to reestablish his family’s status by forcing Lucia into an arranged marriage that culminates in the most spectacular mad scene in all of opera. Metropolitan Opera soprano Rachele Gilmore makes her Virginia Opera debut in the title role of Lucia, a woman at her emotional breaking point. Complementing her as Edgardo is tenor Joseph Dennis, also in his Virginia Opera debut. Don’t miss this dramatic masterpiece of thwarted love and dashed expectations. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. |

Le Roman de Fauvel |
|
Corina Marti
clavisymbalum, double flute, and recorders
The 14th–century relocation of the papacy from Rome to Avignon provided ripe opportunity for both shock and satire.
The Roman de Fauvel, an allegorical verse about an orange-hued donkey who becomes king, and whose marriage to Fortune results in the antichrist, is probably the best known work to come out of the tumult.
Basel-based virtuosa Corina Marti performs exquisite musical selections by Philippe de Vitry and others, Ars Nova tales that tell of calamity that ensues when a state loses its way and an ass takes the throne. |

A Cardinal who never took holy orders, Mazarin, né Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino, was born near Naples, grew up in Rome, and became Chief Minister of France. The most powerful advisor to Louis XIV was more fascinated by art than theology, importing innumerable Italian compositions and a fair number of Italian composers in service of the French state. His dedication to artistic splendor was a hallmark of his tenure and a gift to subsequent generations.
Native sons whom he championed include Luigi Rossi, Virgilio Mazzocchi, Francesco Cavalli and Giacomo Carissimi, and their work came to transform the music of France. Arias, cantatas, and operas by these Italian composers and more can be found to this day at the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, where many treasures of Mazarin’s collection still await a performance in our own time. |

Born out of the salons of the Grand Siècle, the 1652 manuscript called La Rhétorique des Dieux by Denis Gaultier offers an impressive synthesis of music, mythology, engraving, gold work, prose, and poetry.
Weaving ravishing music with the spoken word, Boston-based lutenist Catherine Liddell mines the mythological roots of lute repertoire of Versailles, one golden age mirrored in another.
This concert is produced by Salon/Sanctuary Concerts and made possible in part by the generous co-sponsorship of NYU Maison Française.

PIAF! The Show |
|
Inspired by the award-winning movie La Vie en rose, PIAF! THE SHOW is a musical celebration of the life and music of the legendary French chanteuse.
Conceived and directed by the Nice-based theatrical maverick Gil Marsalla, this special concert stars the internationally acclaimed Anne Carrere, a young French performer hailed as "Edith Piaf's legitimate musical heiress."
In two 45-minute acts, the show narrates the rags-to-riches story of the Parisian singer's career through her unforgettable songs, complemented by a visual tapestry of previously unreleased photographs and images of famous locations of the Edith Piaf era.
PIAF! THE SHOW premiered in 2015 as a tribute to "The sparrow of Montmartre" on the centennial of her birthday. With over half a million tickets sold in more than 30 countries—including a sold-out one-night-only performance at Carnegie Hall in January, 2017—and rave reviews worldwide, this is your chance to see the show in the New York!

Baryshnikov Arts Center presents Tarek Yamani: Afro-Tarab for Two |
|
Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) continues its Spring 2018 Music with Afro-Tarab for Two, featuring critically acclaimed Lebanese-American composer and jazz pianist Tarek Yamani and vibraphonist Sasha Berliner. Yamani reinvents classical Arabic music through original jazz compositions, exploring the music of his homeland within the framework of African-American jazz. The result, a genre often dubbed "Afro-Tarab," takes audiences on a journey from late 1800's Egypt and Iraq to contemporary New York. The John Cage & Merce Cunningham Studio, with cabaret-style seating and beverages provided, lends itself to the intimacy of a jazz club. The performances follow Yamani's participation in Spring 2018 BAC Space, a four-week creative residency period designed to encourage peer exchange. |

Program:
Ives Sonatas
Stefan Jackiw and Jeremy Denk are recognized as two of today’s most significant chamber music artists, captivating audiences with playing that combines purity of expression with impeccable technique. Having performed together for the better part of a decade, they have developed such a natural rapport that one reviewer speculated that “the legendary 19th-century recitals of violinist Joseph Joachim and pianist Clara Schumann couldn’t have sounded better than Jackiw and Denk”? (Seattle Times). But leave it to the ever-candid Denk to define his recital partner best: “Stefan’s a rare combo: super-smart, perhaps even analytical, but not remotely cold or cynical. He helps you to remember that classical music is not just erudite crap for snobs and nerds–it’s supposed to take your exhausted, stultified synapses and give them a thrill they won’t soon forget.” |
