Sergei Taneyev - Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 30
Anton Arensky - String Quartet No. 2 in A minor
Blazing stars such as Tchaikovsky risk eclipsing less sensational talents, but these more modest figures can have their moments of greatness too. Anton Arensky's Quartet, composed in memory of Tchaikovsky, is for an ensemble of single violin, viola and two cellos, giving the sound a haunting dark richness. Quotations from Orthodox chants and from Tchaikovsky's song 'Legend' suggest a prayer for the composers soul, but the outcome is joyous and celebratory. Tchaikovsky's pupil Sergei Taneyev is sometimes called 'the Russian Brahms'. He cherished Classicism and intricate counterpoint and set his face against populist emotionalism. His Piano Quintet is powerful and purposeful, however, and its sense of heroic determination is ultimately very mo |

Three Gertrude Stein Plays in the Shape of an Opera
When an oddball couple, their sassy housekeeper, a sewing machine, and a deranged radio all start singing, Stein’s playful language is transformed into the ecstatic and uncannily beautiful new opera from composer Daniel Thomas Davis, librettist Adam Frank, and director-designer Doug Fitch. From a shopping expedition that turns into an erotic adventure to a presidential election party that goes prophetically and horribly wrong, Stein’s genius for upending convention is made startlingly relevant to our own cultural and political moment. This world premiere features an all-star lineup including vocalists Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek (Anonymous 4), Ariadne Greif, and Andrew Fuchs, joined by the Momenta Quartet and musical director David Bloom.

Masses Ancient and Modern |

CONCORA returns to Trinity College Chapel, where the ensemble has performed sold-out programs in the last two seasons. In February, the ensemble will perform beautiful and inspiring settings of the ancient Mass text that will soar beneath the Chapel's spectacular Gothic arches. The program opens with timeless Gregorian chant, in a complete presentation of Missa Orbis factor, one of the most highly-regarded mass settings of the Solemnes tradition. Renaissance polyphony is represented by the four-voice setting of 16th-century Tudor composer William Byrd, music that remains fresh after more than four centuries. In his Mass for Double Choir, Swiss composer Frank Martin fuses the linear textures of Gregorian chant with highly-charged choral polyphony in a setting that is in turns contemplative, exultant, somber, and glorious. After CONCORA's program of early music at Trinity College Chapel in 2016, one listener said, "This is singing on a par with Pomerium and the Tallis Scholars!" Reserve tickets soon, as seating |

William Shakespeare’s iconic 15th century language meets Benjamin Britten’s 20th century inventive and enchanting music in this delightful opera about love, forgiveness, and the power of dreams. A domestic dispute between the king and queen of fairies spills into the human realm, creating chaos as the stories of three couples and a troupe of amateur actors collide with hilarious results. Nothing is what it seems as fairies, “rude mechanicals,” and moonstruck young lovers spend a single, magical night in the forest. Adam Turner conducts this opera’s lush dynamic score while many Virginia Opera favorites--soprano Heather Buck (Titania), baritone Matthew Burns (Bottom), and tenor David Blalock (Lysander)--return to perform in this comic tour de force. Sung in English with English supertitles. |
