Picture Studies for orchestra A commission by the Kansas City Symphony and Michael Stern This season Adam Schoenberg began his tenure as the first-ever composer-in-residence of the Kansas City Symphony. His duties include a commissioned work for the orchestra in addition to teaching and outreach programs. For his commission, Adam was asked to write a 21st century Pictures at an Exhibition. His entitled Picture Studies are based on modern paintings, photographs and sculptures in the collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. In the Mussorgsky/Ravel tradition, some of the studies were first written as highly-virtuosic piano studies which he then orchestrated. The 26-minute piece, consisting of 10 movements including an introduction and interlude (the "promenade"), was inspired by works of art by Baasch, Blake, Bloch, Calder, van Gogh (shown), Mirò, Kandinsky, and Sugimoto. Schoenberg has already demonstrated his affinity with the visual arts by his very successful and widely-performed o

David K. Ingalls served as President of LACO’s Board of Directors from 1980 to 1983 and as Chair from 1983 to 1988; and Jennifer Diener served as President from 1991 to 1995 and Chair from 1995 to 1998. Both were instrumental in establishing the Orchestra as a premier cultural institution of Los Angeles and currently serve on LACO’s newly established Emeritus Board of Directors. New York-based composer Ricky Ian Gordon’s 19-part song cycle for baritone and string quartet is about love, loss and finding solace and is Gordon’s most personal composition as it deals with the death of his lover, Jeffrey Grossi, from AIDS. It is his Kaddish: the Jewish prayer for mourners -- and one of the only operas that deals directly with AIDS. It will be performed by San Francisco's Del Sol Quartet and baritone, Jesse Blumberg. As to the origin of the title, Green Sneakers, Gordon says "There was a day after Jeffrey’s death when I was staring into our closet from the vast desolation of our bed. These sad little green sneakers suggested a text about the day we bought them together. It poured out of me and ended up a cycle of poems that tells the story of that day and the period after it — all the way up to Jeffrey’s death." Following this performance, Green Sneakers will head to New York's Lincoln Center as part of the American Songbook series.

ARTISTS Sebastian Chamber Players – Daniel S. Lee, violin; Ezra Seltzer, cello; Jeffrey Grossman, harpsichord CONCERT Exploring works by Archangelo Corelli and his contemporaries, this program demonstrates how Corelli’s older Roman compatriots, Frescobaldi and Stradella, set the stage for the development of Corelli’s and his pupil Geminiani’s harmonic and structural language. As Orpheus used his music as a rhetorical weapon, Corelli brought a new level of virtuosity and expression to his violin playing. Midtown Concerts offers workers in midtown as well as the general public the opportunity to enjoy high-quality performances of music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods in a convenient, comfortable, acoustically superb venue. Tickets are not necessary; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Free-will donations are gratefully accepted at the door. The critically-acclaimed Silent Night recounts a miraculous moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. On World War I’s western front, weapons are laid down when Scottish, French and German officers defy their superiors and negotiate a Christmas Eve truce. Enemies become brothers as they come together to share Christmas and bury their dead in a moving, dramatic work that features soaring, lyrical melodies and a stellar cast. Acclaimed tenor William Burden stars as the drafted opera singer whose voice inspires peace among adversaries, with soprano Kelly Kaduce as his love interest, Anna Sørenson, and baritone Troy Cook returns as Father Palmer, the Scottish priest. A host of important debuts are in store, including bass-baritone Craig Irvin as Lieutenant Horstmayer, the German commanding officer; baritone Liam Bonner as Lieutenant Audebert, the conflicted French commander; and baritone Gabriel Preisser as Lieutenant Gordon.
