  New York, NY United States
Web: http://chelseasymphony.org/concert/december-1-holiday-concert

The Chelsea Symphony's one-night-only holiday concert features a special guest narrator in a beloved annual TCS tradition, the performance of resident composer Aaron Dai's The Night Before Christmas. The concert opens with two festive brass works featuring trumpeter Warren Wernick: Leopold Mozart's Sinfonia Pastorale and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concert Rondo. The Reinecke Flute Concerto featuring Dirk Wels, and the smoldering Moldau by Smetana close out the first half. The concert continues with Tzigane by Ravel featuring violinist Megan Hilands. This year TCS is thrilled to present another celebrated tradition, our annual performance of Sleigh Ride, this year guest conducted by the winning bidder of the 2016-17 holiday auction, and a person very close to the orchestra, Pam Aubin! A silent auction in support of the orchestra will take place before the downbeat and during intermission, concluding during a festive wine reception following the concert. Start your holiday season with TCS!

December 2, 2017 at 8:00 pm December 3, 2017 at 2:00 pm Virginia Opera continues its season with Giacomo Puccini’s magnum opus, The Girl of the Golden West (La fanciulla del West), considered the first “spaghetti western.” Set during the California Gold Rush of 1849, this Italian opera is Puccini’s take on the rough and tough Wild West and features familiar themes of unrequited love, jealousy, betrayal, redemption, and changing fate. The story follows Minnie, a gun toting saloon owner of the Polka Saloon. Minnie is the object of desire for all of the whiskey-guzzling and card-playing patrons of her establishment, but Minnie rebuffs the cowboys and gold-diggers and instead falls head over heels for a mysterious stranger who might just be a wanted highway bandit in disguise. This thrilling Western melodrama is vividly brought to life under the direction of Virginia Opera’s beloved Lillian Groag. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

Since forming in 2010, Neave Trio – violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov, and pianist Eri Nakamura – has earned enormous praise for its engaging, cutting-edge performances. WQXR explains, "'Neave' is actually a Gaelic name meaning 'bright' and 'radiant', both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making." The Boston Musical Intelligencer included Neave in its "Best of 2014" and “Best of 2016” roundups, writing, "it is inconceivable that they will not soon be among the busiest chamber ensembles going,” and “their unanimity, communication, variety of touch, and expressive sensibility rate first tier.” The Center for Arts in Natick is a community arts organization serving the MetroWest Boston region by increasing opportunities to experience, participate in, and learn about the arts.

SIX. TWENTY. OUTRAGEOUS. Three Gertrude Stein Plays in the Shape of an Opera When an oddball couple, their sassy housekeeper, a sewing machine, and a deranged radio all start singing, Stein’s playful language is transformed into the ecstatic and uncannily beautiful new opera from composer Daniel Thomas Davis, librettist Adam Frank, and director-designer Doug Fitch. From a shopping expedition that turns into an erotic adventure to a presidential election party that goes prophetically and horribly wrong, Stein’s genius for upending convention is made startlingly relevant to our own cultural and political moment. This world premiere features an all-star lineup including vocalists Jacqueline Horner-Kwiatek (Anonymous 4), Ariadne Greif, and Andrew Fuchs, joined by the Momenta Quartet and musical director David Bloom.

Go back in time with Alessandra Belloni and I Giullari di Piazza when they perform their musical version of the beloved 17th century play "La Cantata dei Pastori" (The Shepherd's Cantata), performed in Italian with English narration by La Befana, the good witch of Christmas. An ensemble of 15 musicians on period instruments, singers, dancers and actors recreate the traditional story of Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem. On the way they meet Razzullo, a commedia dell'arte character, and fight off demons sent by the devil to stop the birth of Jesus. Good triumphs over evil, and the play ends with a singing of the oldest recorded Neapolitan Christmas song.
