Bridgetower Project highlights the remarkable yet long-overlooked legacy of George Bridgetower, the Afro-European violin virtuoso for whom Beethoven wrote his Sonata No. 9 in A Major, Op. 47, long known as the “Kreutzer.” Ilya Kaler, the only violinist in history to win first prizes at the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, and Paganini Competitions, joins Steinway Artist pianist Rasa Vitkauskaite, together with multi-Grammy winner Paquito D’Rivera and other distinguished guest artists. The program includes works by Beethoven, Florence Price, and William Grant Still, as well as readings from former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Rita Dove’s "Sonata Mulattica," and the world premiere of D’Rivera’s new chamber work inspired by Bridgetower’s only surviving composition. Event begins at 7:30 pm.
