The Echo Drift (Prototype Festival) |
|
“New York’s most dependably interesting source of new music theater…This vibrant festival becomes more central to the future of opera with every passing year.” — The New York Times
Convicted murderer Walker Loats is trapped in a timeless prison. Unexpectedly befriended by a moth with an offer of a perceived way to freedom, Walker must choose between paying her dues or taking a shortcut that offers to rig the game in her favor. Oscillating between the confines of a tiny cell and an expansive visual world of animation, The Echo Drift unravels a cycle of deceit, temptation, seduction, and fantastical perception. Featuring a live chamber ensemble, electronics, and a six-channel surround sound system, this world premiere opera explores the freewheeling nature of the mind when it is robbed of external stimuli and questions, when in extreme circumstances, is it possible to act in a way that goes against one’s nature? |

Marcel Proust’s epic literary masterpiece comes to life in a stunning new production from Da Camera of Houston created by artistic director Sarah Rothenberg. Equal parts concert and theater, A Proust Sonata transforms music, painting and literature into a moving performance.
Excerpts from In Search of Lost Time and the memoirs of Proust’s housekeeper and confidant, Céleste Albaret, are interwoven with sound collage, paintings, photographs, and the music that inspired Proust to evoke the author's themes of memory and childhood as well as Parisian salons and his final reclusive years when he withdrew from society to complete his magnum opus.
The performance features the music of Fauré, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin, Ravel, Beethoven, Leon Delafosse, and Proust’s lover and artistic collaborator, Reynaldo Hahn.

Mozart’s final concerto—and one of the last of all his works—the Clarinet Concerto is a haunting, soulful piece. The mellow tones of the clarinet were the perfect medium to express his late-life emotions, including his dismay at the ill health of his deeply cherished wife, Constanze. Rob Kapilow and the TSO’s distinguished Principal Clarinet first take you to the piece’s heart; then they perform it, complete.
