Pack your bags! Maria Broom and the BSO Woodwind Quintet are going to take your family on a musical journey Around the Globe.
Arrive early: Bring the entire family for this immersive experience including pre-concert lobby activities courtesy of Port Discovery and The Waldorf School (Meyerhoff), and Levine (AMP), providing crafts, learning experiences, and fun! Lobby doors open 45 minutes prior to the performance at the Meyerhoff, and 30 minutes prior to the performance at AMP by Strathmore.

Writing music that straddles Chinese and Western traditions, Tan Dun is a boundary-breaking artist of limitless imagination and inclusivity, conjuring a soundscape that makes use of everything from ancient relics to smartphones. This first American performance of Five Muses of Dunhuang brings to life forgotten instruments painted centuries ago on devotional murals in Chinese caves. As a conductor, Tan has unique insights into another perceptive witness and recreator of human ritual, Stravinsky, especially in this rarely heard transcription from a Chinese-themed opera. Stravinsky, with his keen ear for real-life rituals, leans into the real splashy Fireworks and Chinese-themed opera transcription.

Setting texts by Brontë, Cummings, and others, fast-rising Czech composer Lukáš Janata explores themes of passage and transformation in BUT LOVE IS STRONGER. Commissioned by Cantori New York, we present the world premiere with string quintet, clarinet, countertenor, and percussion.
The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne, by Vittorio Rieti
First presented in 1948 by the New York City Ballet, Vittorio Rieti brings the Renaissance poem by Lorenzo de’ Medici to the stage in THE TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS AND ARIADNE. Performed with string quintet, clarinet, soprano, baritone and percussion. |

National Book Award-winning author M. T. Anderson will tell the story of how Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, trapped inside the city of Leningrad during the brutal siege by the Germans in World War II, wrote his Seventh Symphony ("Leningrad") as an act of defiance while he was serving as a roof-top fireman watching for incendiary bombs. Incredibly, it was performed by a starving orchestra within the city -- and then was smuggled out via the Middle East to be performed in the United States to promote the war effort. Shostakovich's story is not only an inspiring tale of the power of music -- it's also an important example of how hope can transform spirits and almost miraculously save lives in tempestuous times.

Jose Joaquin Garcia, longtime member of the Puerto Rican Travelling Theater, performs his one-man show, joined by musicians on piano, percussion, and bass. Entitled "How I Survived The Lower East Side In The 70's With My A.M. Radio," the young Nuyorican hero comes of age, armed with only a transistor radio and a singing voice. Garcia tells sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant stories of growing up on Avenue C, uniquely woven with the songs of the early 70's, revealing the power of music and resiliency. |
