This gala event is being presented by special request of Bolivia's President Evo Morales, and will also be attended by President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Daniela Ortega of Nicaragua, Michelle Bachilette of Chile, Lula da Silva of Brazil and dignitaries from throughout the region.
The performance by the National Symphony will be the event's central focus and will include works by Tchaikovsky, Gliere, Strauss, Moncayo, Parrado and Montenegro.
The invitation for the National Symphony to open the Bicentenary celebrations is a direct result of the Orchestra's widely reported progress under the direction of David Handel and the Morales' government's commitment to supporting culture. Visit the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia at

American conductor David Handel, presently Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia, Artistic Director of the Guadalquivir Festival of Bolivia and Principal Conductor of the international organization American Voices, has developed an extraordinary reputation as one of the most respected and innovative conductors in Latin America. His imaginative programming and distinctive community approach have brought record numbers of Bolivians to National Symphony concerts. Since the beginning of his tenure in Bolivia, audience attendance has grown twelve-fold, most of the new audience composed of young concert-goers.
First noticed by Kurt Masur, he has led orchestras throughout the world, including programs for international radio and television broadcast. David Handel has performed widely in the United States, Europe, Asia and in Latin America.
Among David Handel's upcoming activities are several Compact Disc recordings with the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia of music by Antonin Dvorak and Erich Eisner and the recent release of music by David Winkler on Naxos, as well as engagements with orchestras in the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Poland and Russia.
