About the Program
The concert will begin from Romance without Words, a piece written by Karl Dadvidov, a monumental cello virtuoso of the 19th century, with sweet and charming melodies. It will end with the music of of the 20th century icon of cello playing, Mstislav Rostropovich, with his Humoresque. These two pieces create a foundation for a bridge made of masterpieces of the cello and piano repertoir

Now in its 12th year, the series takes place in the purpose-designed Santa Monica home of composer Todd Mason, running from January 24 through May 16, 2026. The season features principal and longtime members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Opera Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and Long Beach Symphony, along with faculty and alumni from Juilliard, USC, and UCLA. Programs span traditional and contemporary repertoire and include preconcert talks by LA Philharmonic’s Dr. Kristi Brown-Montesano.
Founded in 2013 by Mason and his late wife, Robin, the series continues Los Angeles’s tradition of private-residence concerts in an intimate, custom-built 50-seat space. Season opens Jan. 24 with pianist Marisa Gupta performing works by Chopin, Barber, Migo, and a new piece by Mason.

The Timbre Tantrum concept is simple and bold: multiple performers, one instrument, endless sonic possibilities. Previous 'Tantrums' have shaken the room with brass and strings—'Trumpetation' (four trumpets), 'TromBonafide' (four trombones), and 'The Fiddlers' (four violins). Now, the spotlight turns to the saxophone family, ready to howl, whisper, and explode across the full spectrum of sound.
The evening features an electrifying lineup of saxophonists: Todd Rewoldt, Gottfried Stöger, Dennis Brandner, and Melissa Williams, joined by a powerhouse rhythm section: Gene Pritsker -guitar, Jeniffer Vincent - bass, and Max Pollak - percussion.
