Close Encounters With Music Presents: “On the Wings of Song”—Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Mendelssohn Piano Trio

info@cewm.orghttp://https://cewm.org Schumann’s Dichterliebe, Op. 48, unfolds as a sequence of unstable emotional states, less narrative than accumulation. As pianist Adam Golka describes it, “the cycle feels like an entire lifetime… the ultimate illusion of the perception of time,” with the piano continually reframing the voice and, in the final postlude, absorbing what remains unresolved.
Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 49, offers no simple contrast. Beneath its clarity lies, as violinist Miranda Cuckson notes, “hot-blooded passion… gutsiness and dark storms,” its lyricism propelled by urgency and structural tension rather than surface polish.
Together, the works trace a shift not toward resolution, but toward release.

World Premiere
An opera by Gregory Spears
Performed in English with English supertitles
In this opera, the chorus has the starring role. Composer Gregory Spears, whose music has been called “astonishingly beautiful” (The New York Times), “coolly entrancing” (The New Yorker), and “some of the most beautifully unsettling music to appear in recent memory” (The Boston Globe), creates a labyrinthine soundscape to accompany a dream-like rendering of the fairytale “Sleeping Beauty,” inspired by modernist writer Robert Walser. As the Opera Philadelphia Chorus sings itself in and out of slumber, the voices pull us into a liminal space where time is both fractured and cyclical. Conceived with and directed by the transformative Jenny Koons, this visually dazzling world premiere activates a collective voice to question the fragile line between waking and dreaming. Corrado Rovaris conducts.
All tickets are Pick Your Price, starting at $11. $10 rush tickets will be available before the performance.

nlaschever@bostonbaroque.orghttp://https://bostonbaroque.org/idomeneo Boston Baroque proudly presents Idomeneo, the powerful opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that explores the tragic conflict between duty and love. Premiered in Munich in 1781 for the court of Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, the opera was written at a time when Mozart was eager to establish himself as a serious composer of opera seria. Drawing on the classical tradition of Italian opera, he infused Idomeneo with unprecedented emotional depth, psychological realism, and dramatic sophistication. Each aria and ensemble is carefully crafted to reveal the inner conflicts of the characters, showcasing Mozart’s mastery of orchestration and his innovative approach to character development, rather than simply highlighting vocal virtuosity.
The libretto, based on a Greek myth, enabled Mozart to explore themes of duty, sacrifice, and human frailty. He pushed the boundaries of the form by blending the formal elegance of opera seria with sudden bursts of dramatic tension and expressive orchestral color. Notably, Idomeneo
