Newport, RI – As part of the 2022 Newport Classical Music Festival (formerly Newport Music Festival), which runs from July 1-17, 2022, four exceptional pianists –– Joyce Yang, Sarah Cahill, Inna Faliks, and Dmitry Masleev –– are coming to Newport to perform. Yang and Masleev will perform at The Breakers (44 Ochre Point Ave.) on July 2 and July 13 respectively. Cahill will perform at the Newport Art Museum on July 5 and Faliks will perform at Castle Hill Inn on July 7, 2022.

On Saturday July 2, 2022 at 8pm, Joyce Yang will perform Grieg’s Lyric Pieces, Schumann’s Carnaval, Op. 9; Mozart’s Fantasia in D Minor, K. 397: Andante, Aaron Jay Kernis’s “Un Bacio” – A Kiss (Romance & Transfiguration) on themes by John Corigliano and Mark Adamo, and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (arranged by Agosti). First gaining recognition around the globe in 2005 following her Silver Medal win at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Joyce Yang’s artistry as a soloist and in the company of chamber ensembles and orchestras has thrived at venues including Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum, Kennedy Center, Chicago’s Symphony Hall, and Zurich’s Tonhalle. She has also been the featured soloist with major orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the BBC Philharmonic, and more. Acclaimed by The New York Times for her “vivid and beautiful playing,” Yang is bound to deliver a passionate performance. 

On Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at 3pm, Sarah Cahill, described as “a sterling pianist and an intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde” by The New York Times, will present a four-hour marathon performance of music by women composers from around the world as part of her ongoing project The Future Is Female. An enthusiastic supporter of new music by contemporary composers, Cahill has commissioned and premiered over sixty compositions for solo piano. Composers who have dedicated works to Cahill include John Adams, Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, Julia Wolfe, Yoko Ono, Annea Lockwood, and Ingram Marshall. She was also named a 2018 Champion of New Music, awarded by the American Composers Forum (ACF). Cahill is recording music from The Future is Female in a series of three albums for First Hand Records. The first volume, “In Nature,” was released in March 2022 with the second installment to be released in September. Recent performances include concerts presented by the Barbican in London, Carolina Performing Arts, Carlsbad Music Festival, Detroit Institute of Arts, University of Iowa, Bowling Green New Music Festival, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, North Dakota Museum of Art, and Mayville State University.

On Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 7:30pm Ukrainian-born pianist and Newport Classical-favorite Inna Faliks returns to the festival to give a special performance at Castle Hill Inn. The program, titled Reimagining Schumann and Ravel, ties together three centuries of music and a range of social commentary and interpretations with her acclaimed artistry and impressive technique. The program opens with Clara Schumann’s G minor Sonata which, though unpublished until 1991 and nearly forgotten, is a powerful testament to Schumann’s profound gifts as a pianist-composer. The second half of the program showcases Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit alongside new works by three important living composers, each commissioned in response to Ravel’s notoriously complex work, by composers Paola Prestini, Timo Andres, and Billy Childs. Described by The New Yorker as “adventurous and passionate,” Faliks has established herself as one of the most communicative, and poetic artists of her generation. She has made a name for herself through commanding performances of standard piano repertoire, as well genre-bending, interdisciplinary projects, and inquisitive work with contemporary composers. Her distinguished career has brought thousands of recitals and concerts throughout the US, Asia, and Europe. 

On Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at 8pm, extraordinary piano soloist Dmitry Masleev will make his debut with Newport Classical. The 2015 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition-winner will perform a program that celebrates the prolific legacy of the great Russian composers. Masleev is quickly becoming world renowned for his interpretations of these masterworks, with his“ transcendent virtuosity augmented by his delicate touch” (Diapason). Since his explosive debut at and win at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, where he performed Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Orchestre National de France, Masleev has only continued to garner admiration for his growing reputation as an “architect of the piano” (Altamusica), with invitations to perform at numerous festivals worldwide, including the Lucerne Festival, Klavierfestival Ruhr, La Roque d’Anthéron, Montreux, Rheingau, Bad Kissingen, Bodensee, and Stars of the White Nights. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic inspired Masleev to collaborate with the Moscow Philharmonic Society. He took to offering numerous performances using the Society’s digital concert hall so as to connect with the public at large during a time of great physical, mental, and emotional uncertainty and strife. His program in Newport includes Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons, Op. 37a; Ravel’s Sonatine and À la manière de Borodine, M. 63/1; Scriabin’s Etude in C# minor, Op. 2, No. 1; Khachaturian’s Adagio from Ballet Spartacus; and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 36. 

For its 54th season, Newport Classical Music Festival presents 24 concerts over 18 days and returns for the first time since 2019 to the stunning interiors of Newport’s historic mansions and venues including The Breakers, Blithewold Mansion, The Elms, Castle Hill Inn, Chinese Tea House, Great Friends Meeting House, King Park, Newport Art Museum, Norman Bird Sanctuary, Redwood Library & Athenaeum, and Emmanuel Church. 

Newport Classical has a rich legacy of musical curiosity, presenting the American debuts of over 130 international artists and rarely heard works. Since its founding in 1969, the organization has produced more than 3,000 concerts and hosted more than 1,200 musicians and singers. This year’s festival includes music by more than 40 women composers.

Sarah Cahill: The Future is Female Piano Marathon

Sarah Cahill, hailed as “a sterling pianist and an intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde” by The New York Times and “a brilliant and charismatic advocate for modern and contemporary composers” by Time Out New York, has commissioned and premiered over seventy compositions for solo piano. The Future is Female Piano Marathon centers on the piano literature featuring more than 70 compositions by women around the globe, from the Baroque to the present day, including new commissioned works. This four-hour marathon performance allows audience members to sit and listen for any length of time, with the ability to come and go, as well as the ability to walk around the space.
