Juilliard Singers Take Top Prizes at Naumburg Competition
Mezzo-soprano Erin Wagner, a Manhattan School graduate working on her master’s degree at the Juilliard School, won the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation's 2021 International Vocal Competition, which concluded May 27. The Texas native takes home $25,000, two New York concerts, and a commissioned work. The two second-prize winners are also Juilliard students: Mean Moore, a mezzo, and bass-baritone William Socolf. Prize monies were $12,500 each.
This year’s jury was chaired by Dawn Upshaw, a onetime Naumburg winner, and consisted of Jan Opalach, William Sharp, Dona D. Vaughn, Mark Markham, Tony Arnold, John Harbison, and Benita Valente.
The live, five-day competition, which rotates annually among piano, strings, ensembles, and voice, was held at various venues in Manhattan. The next competition is for string quartets, piano trios, and ensembles of least three members and not more than eight without a conductor. Deadline for applications is June 15, 2021.
The Walter W. Naumburg Foundation was founded in 1926 by Walter Naumburg, a banker and amateur cellist. Julia Bullock, Lucy Shelton, and Shirley Verrett are among past vocal winners.
