Doug Sheldon Is Back in Business

December 10, 2020 | By Susan Elliott, Musical America

It’s been just over 18 months since R. Douglas Sheldon, better known simply as Doug, left Columbia Artists as it chairman and just over three months since that onetime behemoth of a classical music agency subsequently went belly up.

Now Sheldon is back, as the managing partner of Sheldon Artists, LLC, and managing many of the artists he worked with during his five decades at CAMI.

Leading the conductor roster is Valery Gergiev, along with the Mariinsky Theater, of which Gergiev is artistic and general director. At the top of the violinists list is the previously announced Anne-Sophie Mutter, as well as rising young Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma.

Aware that women on the podium will be increasingly in demand, Sheldon has signed Lera Auerbach as a conductor and composer as well as pianist. She is joined by Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen, music and artistic director of the Iceland Symphony and principal conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana as well as the Nordic Chamber Orchestra. French conductor (Ms.) Laurence Equilbey is on the roster as well; she is the founder and music director of the Insula orchestra and Accentus choir. American conductor Robert Trevino, music director of the Basque National Orchestra and chief conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, is also with Sheldon Artists.

Pianists include Tom Borrow, of Israel, and Claire Huangci, from the U.S.  The Royal Philharmonic under Vasily Petrenko is on board, and, among consulting clients, the David Oistrakh String Quartet.

Sheldon Artists staffers, all ex of Columbia Artists, are Karen Kloster, tour coordinator; Emilia Abarano, associate; and Michelle Li, executive assistant. Sheldon, who has been instrumental in nurturing the careers of hundreds of major artists, identifies himself simply as founder and managing partner.
