New York, NY (July 2, 2020) — “America’s foremost new-music group” (Alex Ross), the International Contemporary Ensembleand bespoken, a mentorship program for self-identifying female, non-binary, and trans women artists in classical, contemporary, and jazz music, co-present Pathways: Art & Technology, a free, four-part series of panels and workshops focusing on the intersection of technology and art.

Each session features speakers discussing their artistry and practice across four disciplines – moving image, audio engineering, live-sound, and video – and how their work intersects within each area. The series intends to serve as platform for empowerment, breaking down the barriers to using technology in an artist’s practice, especially for women and gender non-conforming artists. After hearing from each artist about their artistic journey, the panel will split into two topic-specific breakout rooms – sound and video – where attendees are encouraged to bring questions related to their own projects.

About bespoken
Co-founders Gina Izzo and Eunbi Kim launched bespoken in 2018, a mentorship program for womxn in classical, contemporary, and jazz music. Through professional one-on-one mentoring and group workshops, the program equips fellows with skill-building tools and support to develop successful ideas, goals, and projects to create rewarding careers in music.

bespoken fellows receive monthly, one-on-one mentoring sessions for the duration of the program. In addition to these sessions, fellows are supported through group workshops with established and emerging womxn leaders in the arts where they learn skills, share ideas, and ask questions regarding the music industry. These workshops are designed to bring together a community of womxn in the arts who foster creativity and confidence in their day-to-day lives.

Since their foundation, bespoken has mentored 27 fellows in the areas of creative project development, performance and educational opportunities, marketing and branding, job applications and interviews, in support of achieving desired goals, building connections, and finding resources. The program provides motivation for fellows to become more active members of the community through connections and familiarity with an array of projects, organizations, and institutions while encouraging them to advocate for themselves and their art.

bespoken has led workshops and residences at institutions including New York University and Boise State University designed to provide ideas, tools, and resources to help emerging artists thrive in an evolving music industry. bespoken’s wide-range of creative career building skills have played a critical role in the development and outcome of bespoken fellows who have been recognized by presenters, organizations, publications, and institutions such as TEDx, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Kaufman Music Center, Spirit Music Group, Rockwood Music Hall, Smalls Jazz Club, I Care If You Listen, among others. Learn more about bespoken at letsbespoken.org.

About the International Contemporary Ensemble
The International Contemporary Ensemble is an artist collective that is transforming the way music is created and experienced. As performer, curator, and educator, the Ensemble explores how new music intersects with communities across the world. The Ensemble’s 36 members are featured as soloists, chamber musicians, commissioners, and collaborators with the foremost musical artists of our time. Works by emerging composers have anchored the Ensemble’s programming since its founding in 2001, and the group’s recordings and digital platforms highlight the many voices that weave music’s present.

A recipient of the American Music Center’s Trailblazer Award and the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, the International Contemporary Ensemble was also named the 2014 Musical America Ensemble of the Year. The group currently serves as artists-in-residence at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ Mostly Mozart Festival, and previously led a five-year residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The International Contemporary Ensemble was featured at the Ojai Music Festival from 2015 to 2017, and at recent festivals abroad such as gmem-CNCM-marseille and Vértice at Cultura UNAM, Mexico City. Other performance stages have included the Park Avenue Armory, The Stone, ice floes at Greenland’s Diskotek Sessions, and boats on the Amazon River.

OpenICE, made possible with lead funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, offers free concerts and interactive, educational programming wherever the Ensemble performs. As the Ensemble in Residence of the Nokia Bell Labs Experiments in Art and Technology, the International Contemporary Ensemble advances music technology and digital communications as an empowering tool for artists from all backgrounds. Curricular activities include a residency and coursework at the New School College of Performing Arts, along with a summer intensive program, called Ensemble Evolution, where topics of equity, diversity, and inclusion build new bridges and pathways for the future of creative sound practices. Yamaha Artist Services New York is the exclusive piano provider for the Ensemble. Read more at www.iceorg.org and watch over 350 videos of live performances and documentaries at www.digitice.org
