Opera star Angela Brown to present Opera...from a Sistah's Point of View to Indianapolis Public School students on Friday morning, November 8

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana --

At 10 am on Friday, November 8, acclaimed soprano Angela Brown will present her signature show Opera... from a Sistah's Point of View in a live and live-streamed performance at Indianapolis Public School 94. The interactive school visit is made possible by a Create Indy grant awarded to Angela's new nonprofit Morning Brown, Inc., dedicated to bridging the gap between live performance access and students. Indianapolis Opera has also partnered with Morning Brown, Inc., to build awareness and community alliances for opera throughout Indiana and will stream the program from their FaceBook account to any schools or individuals who want to get a taste of Opera...from a Sistah's Point of View."

“We are excited for Angela Brown to perform at George Buck,” said Amanda Milliken, School 94 principal. “We know arts integration is essential for our students and our community. Our goal is to continually expose our students to different opportunities that enable them to embrace various forms of art.” 

?Angela’s visit with students will include a Q and A for them to ask her anything they want to know about her and her career. An added bonus includes an educational video produced by Morning Brown, Inc., that the students will view before Angela's performance. (see below) Produced by funds from the Create Indy grant, the video "breaks the opera ice" for students by introducing them to opera lingo, people in the opera field, and characters in opera that reflect a wide diversity of people.

Traveling the world as an international opera star, Angela Brown noticed something about audiences. “I would see very few people who looked like me,” says Brown. On the surface, it looked like a racial divide, but when Brown performed at schools and universities across the country, she realized the gap was bigger than race. This compelled her to create her show Opera...from a Sistah's Point of View that dispels the myths surrounding the sometimes intimidating art form called opera. Through her not-so-serious takes on the opera stories and by demonstrating the ethnic, geographic, and socio-economic diversity portrayed in opera characters, she helps students from all walks of life and races find themselves in and enjoy opera.

Angela's multi-genre career has been lauded on the front page of The New York Times, CNN, CBS, in Oprah Magazine and Reader's Digest. With classical and pops engagements spanning six continents, Angela has graced the leading opera and symphonic stages of the world. Her vocal artistry is featured on the two-time Grammy Award® winning recording “Ask Your Mama."

Last month, Angela shared her program with Atlanta Public School students and at Spelman College in partnership with The Atlanta Opera. She will perform the show for three schools in Portland in January in partnership with Portland Summerfest and in February for a community audience in Seattle in partnership with Seattle Opera.
