Background Information

THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THE AEGEAN has come to be known as “The Salzburg of the Aegean,” due to the wide compass of its cultural offerings. MidAmerica Productions and MidAm International are the main producers of the Festival of the Aegean, in cooperation with the Syros Municipality, Mayor George Marangos, and the Vice President of Cultural Affairs Thomai Mendrinou.

The Pan-European Philharmonia of Warsaw, of which Peter Tiboris is Music Director, will once again be the resident orchestra at the Festival of the Aegean. Their appearance is made possible by the generous support of the Schwarz Foundation of Munich, Germany.

Many performances take place in the Apollo Theater in Hermopoulos, the capital of Syros. An architectural jewel dating from 1864, the Apollo is one of the oldest indoor theaters of modern times. It has acquired the nickname “La Piccola Scala” because of the widespread belief that it was modeled on Milan’s iconic “La Scala” opera house.

Syros is unrivalled for the matchless beauty of its physical location at the center of the Cyclades island group, with pristine beaches, waterside restaurants offering freshly caught fish, and reliably sunny weather.

Further information on the 15th Annual Festival of the Aegean and the individual artists performing on stage as well as behind the scenes can be found here.
