DaPonte String Quartet To Perform from Portland to Eastport this July
The DaPonte String Quartet will perform their first summer series “Summer Goulash” in eight different locales next month as they travel from Portland, Maine to Eastport, Maine to start their 27th season.
As the title suggests, the program has a Hungarian flavor, as the Quartet continue their year-long exploration of the works of Bela Bartok, with a performance of the Hungarian composer's String Quartet No. 3 Sz.85. The Quartet have a special feeling for Bartók’s music, as they studied the composer with musicians from his inner circle in the early 90’s.
“We studied Bartók closely with Zoltán Székely - Bartók’s sonata partner and friend,” recalls cellist Myles Jordan. “And we worked with other prominent Hungarian masters, including Lorand Fenyves and Eugene Lehner, the violist of the Kolisch String Quartet, who gave the work's European premiere.” The result was "what amounted to an apprenticeship in the Austro-Hungarian tradition."
Other works on the program include Brahms’s String Quartet No.3 in Bflat Major Op.67—quartet, a bright, sunny and perfectly crafted work, and his last string quartet; and Franz Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major Op.20 No.2, one of the works that led him to be dubbed the “father of the string quartet.”
This summer for the first time, the Quartet will be performing in the Boothbay Opera House as well as their regular venues in Brunswick, Portland, South Bristol, and Rockport. After doing “Summer Goulash” in the mid-coast, they will take it on tour Downeast to Machias, Eastport and Surry.
