The Wallis Presents Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra

Traditional and contemporary versions of Vivaldi’s iconic “The Four Seasons” are juxtaposed in a distinctive program by the acclaimed Zürich Chamber Orchestra, led by Music Director Daniel Hope, who serves as violin soloist in both works, presented by the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, March 22, 2018, 7:30 pm.  The concert includes Vivaldi’s classic cycle of the famous Baroque violin concertos followed by Vivaldi Recomposed, Max Richter’s contemporary minimalist take on the masterpiece.  Hope, “among the best in the world” (The Observer), also conducts/performs Fabian Müller’s Intermezzo III “Winter” for Violin and Ensemble.

Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, published in 1725, is among classical music’s most widely performed and recorded works, with its four separate but loosely connected concertos conveying the seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Richter’s Vivaldi Recomposed, written in 2012, transports Vivaldi’s music into the 21st century, with postmodern elements substituting for the original’s Baroque elements.  Richter explains that composing the piece was “about reclaiming this music for me personally, by getting inside it and rediscovering it for myself.”

The Zürich Chamber Orchestra, considered one of the world’s leading chamber ensembles, has performed around the globe and recorded for numerous labels, including Omega, Novalis, Claves, Teldec, CPO and Sony.

South African-born, London-raised, Hope enjoys a distinguished career as both violinist and conductor.  The recipient of the prestigious 2015 Cultural Prize for Music, Hope released in March 2017 his latest album, “For Seasons,” a personal homage to the seasons featuring works dedicated to each month of the year as well as The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, accompanied by the Zürich Chamber Orchestra.  His recording of Richter’s Vivaldi Recomposed, which reached No. 1 in more than 22 countries, is among the most successful classical recordings in recent times.  A prolific recording artist, Hope has recorded exclusively Deutsche Grammophon since 2007. 

This season, Preludes @ The Wallis returns to enhance the audience experience, providing a free pre-concert conversation with artists and special guests one hour prior to each Music @ The Wallis classical music performance.  Classical KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen will discuss each program on the Bram Goldsmith Theater stage allowing attendees a deeper dive into the evening’s music while also offering a complimentary glass of wine courtesy of The Henry Wine Group.
