Boston ¦The New England Philharmonic under the direction of Richard Pittman is now accepting scores for their 33rd Annual Call for Scores. The winning score will be performed by the NEP during their 2018-19 season. The 2017-18 winning composition, Lachlan Skipworth’s “Spiritus,” was chosen from 104 entries from 17 countries.

Since 1985, the NEP has been one of few orchestras of its size in United States with a Composer-in-Residence program that holds an annual Call for Scores, receiving dozens of submissions from around the world. By presenting these new works in the context of pieces by established composers— including classics of the symphonic repertory—the NEP demonstrates that orchestral music is not a finished collection of museum pieces, but a living, evolving tradition. This approach has won the orchestra excellent reviews and wide recognition, including nine national awards for programming from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), and one of the first grants from the Aaron Copland Fund for new music.

The submissions will be reviewed by a committee that includes Maestro Pittman and NEP Composer-in-Residence, David Rakowski. For complete details and to submit an application, click here, or go to: http://nephilharmonic.org/competitions/call-for-scores-2/.

Applications and all materials (including a $40 application fee) must be submitted electronically by 11:59 p.m. EST on April 30, 2018.

About the New England Philharmonic: The mission of the New England Philharmonic, a volunteer orchestra, is to foster the composition and the appreciation of contemporary classical music by performing commissions and recent works alongside traditional repertoire in concerts that engage and electrify audiences. Now performing its 41st season, the NEP, under the direction of Richard Pittman, has garnered international recognition for its daring programming. The orchestra’s illustrious past includes the installation of three landmark programs. The NEP became the first orchestra of its size to support a composer-in-residence (1985), introduce a Call for Scores program (1985), and establish a Young Artist Competition (1994), legacies that endure today.
