Broadway Performer to Guest Teach at Marblehead School of Ballet

(Marblehead, Massachusetts; July 2, 2015) -- Broadway performer Julie Pappas Smith returns to the Marblehead School of Ballet (MSB) this summer to teach two master classes -- floor-barre and musical theatre jazz. Originally from Swampscott, Massachusetts, Pappas Smith began her professional training at MSB.

During the first week, floor-barre will be taught Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24 from 9:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m. The following week, Pappas Smith will teach musical theatre jazz Monday, July 27 through Thursday, July 30 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. In these classes, students will learn correct body alignment, placement and technique. Dancers will be challenged and delighted in the musical theatre jazz class.

Pappas Smith, a mentor for Zena Rommett Floor-Barre, studied floor-barre with world renowned Zena Rommett. She received a BFA from The Boston Conservatory of Music majoring in Musical Theatre.

A seasoned performer, her professional career was launched at Walt Disney World and she opened at Epcot Center, as a dancer and singer. Pappas Smith has presented in various shows and events, alongside and opening for Ben Vereen, Maureen McGovern, Carol Lawrence and Debbie Boone, and she also worked for Tokyo Disneyland.

She has been a featured vocalist at Royal Albert Hall, on cruise lines, and with international and First National Broadway tours across the United States and Europe. Among her credits, she performed in A Chorus Line, Beauty & the Beast, and Showboat, directed and choreographed by Tony Award winners Harold Prince and Susan Stroman.

Pappas Smith's off-Broadway work includes performing regional leading and supporting roles, such as Cats, Kiss of the Spider Woman, South Pacific, West Wide Story, My Fair Lady, and 42nd Street. Today, she teaches dance and voice in the Miami area, choreographs for several magnet programs and is the co-founder of the Miami Young Artists Conservatory.

Celebrating its 43rd year, the Marblehead School of Ballet, founded in 1971 by Paula K. Shiff, has earned a wide reputation for the excellence of its training and integrity of purpose. Classical ballet forms the core of teaching with particular emphasis on correct alignment and development of strength and agility. The sheer pleasure of dance and of music is always central to the classroom experience.

The basic graded program for children includes classes in ballet technique with advanced work in repertoire and pointe. The school also offers a modern dance department, classes for young children in creative movement and classes in improvisation and technique for the older student. MSB is home to the North Shore Civic Ballet Company (NSCBC). The NSCB gives concert performances and a variety of educational programs for schools; all are suitable for different age groups and levels of development.
