May 21, 2015 | By James Dunlop

The album will feature 12 tracks of new contemporary choral music composed by James Dunlop. The fantastic Portsmouth Cathedral Choir have agreed to perform on the album and it is due to be recorded at Portsmouth Cathedral in early October 2015. The album will mainly consist of a cappella works but it will also feature the Northumbrian Small Pipe player, Alice Burn, finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards, as a soloist with the choir.

The Ascension album is a brand new choral album that, with unique opportunities, lets the public participate in its development and have an insight into the album's creation. The title Ascension is taken from the Ascension of Jesus, the Christian festival that celebrates the resurrected Jesus being taken up to Heaven in the presence of eleven apostles.

The album will feature works set to religious text as well as modern contemporary pieces of a melodic thematic nature.

This is James Dunlop's debut album and a big leap in his musical career; it is an excellent opportunity for him to work with Dr David Price and the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir and will bring new, fresh works to the genre, as well as a new composer's voice. Work on the album has been ongoing for many months and looks set to be a welcomed addition to choral repertoire. It will be recorded on location at Portsmouth Cathedral, Hampshire, UK and will be a new modern collection of works to continue and promote the catalogue of choral music.

The Ascension album is a highly ambitious project that requires appropriate financial support. We're all very much looking forward to working on this together and producing the best product possible.

This choral album is unique with regard to the level of pledge rewards available during the Kickstarter campaign. Members of the public can commission, dedicate and name future choral works that feature on the album. These opportunities are few and far between; as well as backers becoming an integral part of the team. The higher end rewards are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and will only be available for the 30 day Kickstarter campaign.

The public will be able to follow the progress of this album through 2015 to its release in late November 2015, by following James on Facebook and Twitter, and have a far more personal experience with its progress and completion than any other choral album to date. During the course of the album project there will be live video streams and chat sessions, full updates on the album's progress and opportunities to have a say with the album details.

Composer James Dunlop says: “The Ascension album couldn't be a more ambitious project for a new composer. I'm extremely privileged (and glad!) that Dr David Price and the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir have agreed to assist me on this new album and I thank them very much for giving me their time and support. I'd also like to thank the Arts Council England for their kind support in helping to fund this venture. It's a daunting prospect knowing that this album will be a new voice in a fantastic genre of music, but it's also an exciting one. I am working with my local choir and the entire album is being recorded in the beautiful Portsmouth Cathedral. This album will showcase the talent of Portsmouth's choral singers and push the recognition of Hampshire's and the United Kingdom's choral music scene far and wide.” Conductor and Choir Director Dr David Price says: “Portsmouth Cathedral musicians are delighted to be working with James. The advent of new choral works is always exciting and rewarding. We look forward to recording James' new works with enthusiasm.”

The Revd Canon Peter Leonard, Residentiary Canon for Discipleship, Growth and Community Outreach says: “Portsmouth Cathedral is delighted to be supporting this exciting and innovative piece. We have a long tradition of excellence in music, new compositions and being involved with the community and this meets all three of these criteria! We are very much looking forward to helping make the album a reality.”
