Dallas Chamber Symphony Presents Second Annual Sight of Sound Film Competition Featuring Young Filmmakers, Original Composition. April 28th
As the Dallas Chamber Symphony completes its third season, the chamber orchestra serves up a mix of old and new by pairing new independent short films with works by Arvo Pärt, Edvard Grieg, Philip Glass, Edward Elgar, Dmitri Shostakovich and others. The season finale will serve as the culmination of the Second Annual Sight of Sound International Film Competition. The concert will be held at the Dallas Performance Hall on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at www.dcsymphony.org.
While Dallas Chamber Symphony has become renowned for its innovative concerts which pair classic silent movies to newly commissioned musical scores, its Sight of Sound International Film Competition explores the opposite of this creative cinematic process. To some concertgoers, the films may seem reminiscent of Disney’s Fantasia, but with a novel and strict adherence to the complete performance of a composer’s original musical work. Pieces are not altered for their film; rather, participating filmmakers create new visual works that are designed to the music. Filmmakers will introduce dramatic narrative, explore abstract visualizations, providing their complementary music selection a creative modern twist.
Sight of Sound has grown dramatically over the past twelve months. It now attracts numerous, high-quality entries from some of the United States’ most respected film schools, including UCLA, CalArts, USC and Chapman University, among many others. The competition has also attracted both international and local entries from student and professional filmmakers. The finalist films which will be screened on April 28 with live orchestral accompaniment, are selected from the field of applicants by a jury of filmmakers. Finalists are eligible to receive a $500 Audience Favorite Award (selected by audience members via text), as well as a $500 Best Picture Award, to be determined by the competition’s professional jury panel.
Sight of Sound is honored to present two exemplary entries submitted by North Texas artists. Local filmmaker Courtney Ware will have her film Blue Disquietude premiered to A Specific Time, written by Dallas-based composer Margaret Barrett. Dallas’ Booker T. Washington High School is also collaborating with the DCS on Sight of Sound, with the Chamber Symphony debuting Montana Brock’s original film, The Last Spring. Brock is currently a junior at the high school.
The performance will be held on Tuesday, April 28th, 2015 at Dallas City Performance Hall (2520 Flora Street, Dallas, Texas 75201). It will begin at 8:00 p.m. Individual tickets are available for $19-$49 each, $12 for students. The entire performance will be family friendly as finalist films are appropriate for all ages.
