World Premiere of Choral Music by Judith Shatin Performed on November 9

The World Premiere of Judith Shatin’s Birkat Hakohanim for SATB a cappella vocal ensemble will be performed by the University Singers, Michael Slon, Artistic Director on Friday, November 9 – 8:00 PM at Old Cabell Hall on the campus of University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The concert is presented by the University’s McIntire Department of Music.
The composer writes, “Birkat Hakohanim, known as The Priestly Blessing, is drawn from the Bible, Numbers 6:24-26. The University of Virginia Singers and their Director, Michael Slon commissioned my SATB a cappella setting. Often found in ancient amulets, and traditionally recited by male descendents of Aaron. It has traditionally performed during parts of the Sabbath and other services, and it appears in wide use in translation in the Christian liturgy. Conductor Michael Slon requested this particular text, and I was drawn to its rich tradition, as well as the spiritual and sonic qualities of the text.”

Orchestras that have performed her music include the Denver, Houston, Virginia, Illinois, Knoxville, Minnesota, National and Richmond Symphonies. Her chamber and choral music is internationally performed and has been featured at festivals throughout North America and Europe. She has been commissioned by organizations and ensembles including the Barlow Foundation, Fromm Foundation, Kronos Quartet, Library of Congress, National Symphony, the Dutch Hexagon Ensemble, the Peninsula Women’s Chorus and the San Francisco Girls’ Chorus.
