New Festival in South America

Festival Internacional de Colonia announces its First Edition on November 8, 9 and 10, 2018. Under
the artistic direction of renowned pianist Enrique Graf, it is the first and only festival in Uruguay that
brings together classical music, tango, jazz, theater, film-documentary and visual arts. Declared of
cultural and touristic interest by the Municipal Government of Colonia, the Ministry of Education and
Culture, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the festival takes place in the
historical center of Colonia del Sacramento, one of the oldest cities in Uruguay, World Heritage Site
(UNESCO).
 
The inauguration with free admission will take place on Thursday, November 8 at noon with an open-air
concert in the gardens of the Bastion del Carmen where a chamber ensemble of the SODRE Youth
Orchestra, the Orfeo Choir and soloists will perform. During the following three evenings and nights at
the Bastion of Carmen, the Stella Cinema and the AFE Cultural Center, emerging and renowned artists
from Argentina, Brazil, the United States and Uruguay will be presented.
 
The festival offers a large and eclectic cultural proposal that goes from a one-woman show with the
great Uruguayan actress Estela Medina in a work that La Nación described this year as: "A master
class ... a legacy of an irreplaceable race, a living testimony of how to occupy the
Stage", to piano recitals with music by Rachmaninoff, bossa nova, tango and jazz. Pianists of the
stature of the American Sean Kennard, winner of the Viña del Mar International Competition and
laureate in the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and the Argentinean Fernando Pérez, Gardel Award and
nominated for the Latin GRAMMY. 
 
The audience will witness the premiere for Uruguay of the documentary "The Messenger on a White
Horse", a production of Australia and Argentina about the former Editor of the Buenos Aires Herald,
Robert Cox and the Argentina of the 70 '.
 
In addition, there will be an exhibition of Uruguayan visual artists curated by an international jury, a
show of vintage cars of the AutoClub of Yesterday, instrumental tango by the quintet La Mufa and a
Vocal Gala with soprano María Antúnez and tenor Martín Nusspaumer from the Operas of Washington,
Bilbao, Florida and Los Angeles.
